In the finals pool, the United States defeated Canada 76-69 after rallying from a 38-33 deficit at the half. The U.S. built a 10-point lead with five minutes to play and although Canada twice closed to within four, the Americans pulled out the win. “Even though we lost, the game was a big step for us,” said coach Kathy Shields. “We are proving we are one of the best defensive teams in the world. With time, when the offence gets to the same level, we’ll win the close games and we will be hard to beat.” Andrea Blackwell led Canada with 17. Bev Smith added 14 and Shawna Molcak 13.

Brazil dumped Canada 82-70. Shawna Molcak paced Canada with 19.

Cuba thrashed Canada 87-69. Bev Smith led Canada with 26.

In the bronze medal match, Canada defeated Cuba 61-54 after rallying from a 28-25 deficit at the half. Canada built an 8-point lead in the second half but Cuba knotted the score with two minutes to play before a Bev Smith rebound and clutch free throw shooting put the Canadians back in the lead. Canada outrebounded Cuba and held them to just .320 from the field. Bev Smith paced Canada with 18. Merelynn Lange added 13 and Jodi Evans 10. “We answered the call today,” said Smith. “I am proud to be on this team and very excited about our future together.” Coach Kathy Shields noted that “we showed how good this team can be when we play tough defence for 40 minutes. We played great as a team and answered many comeback attempts from Cuba. This simply feels great.”
