At the start of the season, Steve Seabrooke resigned as coach of the John Abbott Islanders for personal reasons. He was in his 18th year as the Isles coach and had a career won-loss record of 316-277. He started coaching at Abbott in 1981 and took a two-year break in 1996 and 1997, during which he had heart surgery. Assistant Ron Dorsnie assumed the helm.
