In the semis, the Champlain-Lennoxville Cougars defeated the Dawson Blues 74-65.
In the other semi, the 4th-seeded Maisonneuve Vikings stunned the regular season champ Vanier Cheetahs 85-80.
In the bronze medal match, the Dawson Blues stunned the Vanier Cheetahs 96-74. Coaches Keith Coffin of Vanier and Brent McPhee of Dawson said their teams were feeling the effects of their semi-final losses. “Ok, so we won today, but we should’ve won yesterday,” McPhee told the Montreal Gazette. “We have the talent to win it all but my boys didn’t look like they wanted to win and that’s what hurt them.” Astley Walker led the Blues with 25. John Ohnjec paced Vanier with 33. The Cheetahs (coached by Keith Coffin) also included Pierre Tibblin, Jack Berros, Clint Farley, Gary Jonas, Mark McAuley.
In the final, the 4th-seeded Maisonneuve Vikings continued their improbable run by capturing the title with a 61-52 victory over the Champlain-Lennoxville Cougars. Coach Jean-Guy Morin told the Montreal Gazette that he was flabbergasted. “I thought we had about a 40 per cent chance to beat Vanier and we lost twice to Lennoxville this season, so this championship is very unexpected but it feels great.” Cougars coach Don Caldwell said “we had the talent to win the game but we had to dominate early and we never did. Maisonneuve played a very loose game, while we were very tight and we never got over it.” Vikings point guard Phil Joseph dictated the tempo masterfully, while scoring 13 and being chosen MVP. Stephan Yazedijan led Maisonneuve with 16. Robert Dufour added 14. The Vikings did a great job of containing the league’s two leading scorers, Robert Sewell and Garfield Glasgow. Sewell scored 11 and Glasgow 10. Maisonneuve led 31-26 at the half. Lennoxville rallied back to knot the score at 36 when Joseph took total command to lead the Viking back to a 52-42 lead. “We became a team this week,” Morin said. Before, we were just a bunch of individuals. I think we have less talent but our enthusiasm made up for it.”
