Canada opts not to send a basketball team to the 1995 Pan Am Games in Argentina. Scant weeks before the competition, it is cancelled when only the United States, Argentina, Brazil and Cuba enter. Under the regulations of the Pan American Sports Organization, the field must include a minimum of five teams. It is believed Puerto Rica was having problems assembling a competitive team because many top players are competing for U.S. colleges. Canada decided not to participate in basketball because of the high cost of sending a team to the Games.
