After the season, Cambrian College coach Luc Giroux announced that he was stepping aside from the helm for personal reasons. In turn, the college announced that it was suspending its men’s basketball program for two years. “With the loss of basketball coach Luc Giroux for personal reasons, Cambrian considered its options with respect to the quickly approaching season and the difficulties it would face in putting together a successful team,” said Alison De Luisa, Associate Vice President, Student and Employee Development. “In making this decision, Cambrian is taking this opportunity to re-evaluate the men’s basketball program and our ability to build a successful team in the future. … With the coach stepping down, it doesn’t give the next coach this late in the recruitment cycle to recruit, build a team and be set up for a successful season next year. “Therefore, we decided to suspend the program, suspend the team.” De Luisa says provincial rules stipulate that a suspended team must stay out for a minimum of two years. “We’re taking this time to just regroup, rethink of what that looks like and what our recruitment strategies would need to be moving forward,” she said. The Golden Shield won just one game in the past two seasons.
