The Cougars nerves failed them as they appeared jittery throughout the affair and succumbed to the superior team play of the Colts. Algonquin coach Trevor Costello said his troops were unprepared for the big game jitters and full-court pressure. “It’s a tough way to go out, no question. We prepared for everything we knew they could throw at us but our guys just didn’t react to the pressure. We shot the ball terribly tonight. I’ve been with some of these guys for four years and I just didn’t see their best.” Assistant coach Dino Pezoulas said the Thunder “were flat. It just wasn’t there.” Bailey was chosen player of the game for the Bruins, while Medina earned the laurels for the Thunder.
The second-ranked Humber Hawks eliminated the defending champ and 7th-seeded Fanshawe Falcons 85-68 by forcing a raft of turnovers. Humber took an early 26-20 lead before the Falcons responded with a 7-0 run. Humber countered with a 15-4 run to take a 41-31 lead at the half. Fanshawe never threatened in the second half. J.R. In the last quarterfinal, the third-seeded Belleville Loyalist Lancers nipped the 6th-seeded Welland Niagara Knights 85-84 on a three-pointer by freshman Andrew Harvey with 0.6 seconds on the clock. Niagara took an early 18-3 lead by Loyalist clawed back to within 41-32 at the half. The Lancers opened the second half with a 9-3 run to trim the margin to three and the teams traded the lead for the remainder of the frame. Niagara took an 84-82 lead with 3.4 seconds to play before Loyalist ran an in-bounds play under Niagara’s basket to set the scene for Harvey’s winning trey from an improbable angle that gave Loyalist its only lead of the game. Sheridan opened the second half with a 7-0 run when Jerome Stephenson and Oriene Davis took command as Centennial maintained a healthy lead to the final buzzer. In the final, the Humber Hawks ended the Centennial Colts’ Cinderella run by a 53-44 count. Centennial took an early 9-2 lead before the Hawks rallied to make it 13-11. The teams kept it close til the half, after which Humber led 26-25. Tight defence dominated the second half but the difference appeared to be the absence of Colts all-star Socrate Larrieux, who was quickly forced out of the game early in the second half with a shoulder injury. With the Colts lacking firepower in his absence, Humber pulled out the win. Rookie Hawks coach Darrel Glenn told The Coven that “I am so proud of the guys. All the hard work put in during the season has finally paid off. … Each time we played them, they were a different team. They never really had their full line-up until tonight. … This is the best Centennial College team we’ve played.” Roger Scott said “we just had to fight and play hard. Every team wants this championship. In this type of game, you have to grab every loose ball because every possession is crucial. … I had to step it up. I was on a hot streak for the last month of the season.” Glenn said “we set this as a goal throughout the entire season and it feels good to be here and actually accomplish that goal against a great team.” Shane Dennie paced Humber with 13 points on 6-19 from the floor and 1-10 from the arc.
