In the final, the Algonquin Thunder nipped the Humber Hawks 57-55 on a last minute three-pointer by point guard Jonathan Bell, who was chosen player of the game for the Thunder. “We’re going to nationals,” said elated Thunder assistant coach Dino Pezoulas. “It was close the whole way. There were 10 lead changes in the final seven minutes but the guys pulled it out.” Bell, who was chosen tournament MVP, paced the Thunder with 29 points. Adam Eisenstat added 8, Ryan Bennison 6, Mark Newman 6, Geoff Eisenstat 2 and Tyrone Baugh 2. Ray Morgan was chosen player of the game for the Hawks after scoring 24. Jeremy Walters added 8, Aron Bariagiabre 8, Neriya Tsur 6, Roger Scott 4, Dejvis Begah 3 and Tamique Young 2. “Algonquin has a tendency of getting up on teams and keeping them down. They play a fast, up-tempo game and you have to be careful of getting behind,” Hawks guard Jeremy Walters told the Coven. Post Justice Rathwell said “the intensity level was there. Both teams were going at it, elbows were flying, blood and sweat was pouring.” Hawks coach Mike Katz said “they deserved it. They made the plays at the end and we didn’t. I give them a lot of credit because they
earned it. … We’ve been in a bit of shooting struggle.” Swingman Tamique Young said “the better team won.” An attempted Ray Morgan trey at the buzzer for the Hawks missed the cylinder. Hawks forward Dejvis Begaj said “we fought hard and we had a chance to win the game, but we also had some crucial turnovers.”
