Canada dropped a 99-89 decision to the Americans at Roberto Clemente Coliseum. The U.S. was paced by Rosie Walker’s 28 points and 12 boards. Denise Curry added 22 points and 11 boards.
Canada lost 90-81 to Cuba. The game was close for most of the affair before Cuba ripped off 10 unanswered points to take a 70-61 lead. “Pick up your man,” screamed American men’s team member Isiah Thomas to the Canadians. “Er, I mean, pick your woman.” Starting centre Sylvia Sweeney spent most of the game on the bench with four fouls and when she returned in the final quarter, quickly picked up her fifth and hurled the ball at a Cuban. “My temper is my downfall,” Sweeney said. “But if the referees were calling things consistently, things like that wouldn’t happen. I don’t feel that the whole game is my fault. We win as a team or lose as a team.” Coach Don McCrae disagreed. “She’s our heavy hitter. But this isn’t boxing. It’s basketball. She drew her fifth foul and she had a temper tantrum and there’s no place for that.”
Canada ensured itself of the bronze medal by defeating Mexico 77-66. Chris Critelli and Carol Turney each scored 18. Sylvia Sweeney added 12.
