In the semis, the Mount Royal Cougars whipped the SAIT Trojans 103-77.
In the other semi, the Lethbridge CC Kodiaks clubbed the Camrose Lutheran Vikings 92-55.
In the bronze medal match, the Camrose Lutheran Vikings stunned the SAIT Trojans 81-74 as Glen Olsen scored 28 and Grant Ashlee 18. Ed Benedt led the Trojans with 20. Ed Dick added 17. The Trojans (coached by Terry Kimmel) also included John Kugi, Jim Myers, Doug Ball, Richard Pengilly, Terry Burke, Jim Williams, Joey Kubinec, Kelly Briscoe, Steve Bolin.
In the final, the Lethbridge Kodiaks nipped the Mount Royal Cougars 81-79 as Frank Willis drained a 35-footer at the buzzer. The win gave the Kodiaks their fifth consecutive title. “I think I’ll be up all night. I don’t think I’ll be able to sleep at all,” said Willis. Coach Ben Brooks said “what a shot” while assistant Jack Linderman attributed the win to depth. “Guys were going in their off the bench and really doing a job for us. It was Novak who went in there and tied the thing up for us.” The Kodiaks nearly squandered a 12-point fourth quarter lead. The Cougars attempted to stall and had the ball with 18 seconds to play and the score tied at 79 but were called for travelling. Cougars coach Jack Kenyon called it “a blatant error, when we travelled, caused us to turn the ball over. The game was tied, we should have just worked the ball around and taken the good shot. The game was ours. That’s a very tough way to lose.” Dave Preuss paced the Kodiaks with 21. Willis added 17, Glen Schuler 12 and Jim Ralph 7. “I don’t mind winning a game like that,” said Schuler. Brooks said “I’m so proud of those guys. Who didn’t contribute? Everybody made the difference for us tonight. Bruce Hamilton came up with four key points for us right when we needed them at the end. I could mention them all individually; they all contributed.” Rodney Thomas paced the Cougars with 32. American-product James Crawford added 16. The Cougars included several Americans but ACAC rules precluded them from having more than two on the floor simultaneously. The Kodiaks led 43-37 at the half.
