In the quarterfinals, the 5^th-seeded Camosun Chargers edged the 4^th-seeded Capilano Blues 68-64. Camosun led 14-13 after one quarter. Capilano led 32-27 at the half. Camosun led 51-46 after three quarters. “We knew what kind of offense they like to run,” said Camosun coach Carl Macdonald, “and we knew what they were going to be doing against us on defense. What stood out to me was the contributions from every single player. Everybody contributed, everybody had value within the win. Every player did what we asked them to do, and didn’t do a lot of things we asked them not to do.” Emma Goldschmid was chosen player of the game for the Chargers, while Carmel M’Bikata earned the laurels for the Blues. In the other quarterfinal, the 3^rd-seeded Douglas Royals clipped the 6^th-seeded Kwantlen Pacific Eagles 66-58. The Eagles built an early lead but Royal gunner Simran Bir kept draining treys to rally the Royals. The score was knotted at 16 after one quarter. Douglas led 30-29 at the half. Kwantlen led 40-37 after three quarters. The score was knotted at 53 after regulation. Samantha McPhail notched an and-one to force overtime. But Chloe Kennedy notched 10 points in overtime, including a trio from beyond the arc, to pull out the win for the Royals. “We just hit shots,” said Douglas coach Courtney Gerwing. “Last time we played them we were terrible from the three. [Today] we hit a few early ones, which changed the tempo for us, and then Chloe hit three in overtime. That was it. It’s nice to get the first game out of the way. I would prefer to have the first game even though it’s risky, if you lose you’re done. But now we’ve got the jitters out we’ll come tomorrow prepared to play.” Eagles coach Dan Nayebzadeh said Samantha McPhail “did a great job of protecting the paint by defending Douglas’s tough post players. She blocked or changed a ton of shots, and kept us in the game with her toughness. In the semis, the top-seeded Quest Kermodes nipped the 5^th-seeded Camosun Chargers 59-56. The outcome was in doubt until the final seconds when Kermodes guard Miriam Baumann blocked a final three-point attempt from Chargers sharpshooter Emma Cunningham. The game was tied at 13 after one quarter. The Kermodes led 25-24 at the half. The chargers led 38-37 after three quarters. The nationally top-ranked Kermodes were sloppy, missing open shots, fouling freely and often turning over the ball. Emma Cunningham hit a clutch three-pointer for the Chargers with 22 seconds left to regain the lead, but then Camosun fouled Miriam Baumann who hit both for the eventual winning points. “It’s playoffs, one and done, anything could happen,” said Quest coach Dany Charlery. “We had to lay it all on the line and they did too, and we somehow ended up on the ‘W’ side. We just ground this one away.” Aimee Johnston was chosen player of the game for the Kermodes, while Ali Cooper earned the laurels for the Chargers. In the other semi, the 3^rd-seeded Douglas Royals stunned the 2^nd-seeded Vancouver Island Mariners 62-57. The Mariners opened with an 11-4 run but then went scoreless for nearly 10 minutes. Douglas, sparked by a long three-pointer from Chloe Kennedy, went on a 15-0 run, and outscored VIU 14-5 in the second quarter. The Royals led 29-16 at the half. The Mariners, down only three with less than a minute remaining, were forced to foul Royals all-star Nanaya Miki, and the guard made both foul shots to extend Douglas’ lead to 60-55. “We approached it as if we were down a bit, chipping away, getting stops, and getting good shots,” said Royals coach Courtney Gerwing. “If you try to keep a lead it never really goes well. If you try to catch up to somebody, it’s a better tactic and causes less anxiety.” Simran Bir was chosen player of the game for the Royals, while Jenna Carver earned the laurels for the Mariners. In the bronze medal match, the 2^nd-seeded Vancouver Island Mariners clubbed the 5^th-seeded Camosun Chargers 57-44. The Chargers led 13-10 after one quarter and 22-20 at the half. But the Mariners took command of the paint in the third quarter as they built their lead to 45-29. “It’s all about pride and heart,” said Mariners coach Bill McWhinnie. “This is a really tough game to play and I realize most teams don’t really want to play it, but it has to be played so why not win it and end PACWEST play on a good note? It challenges the player’s character, and I thought both teams played very hard considering the circumstances. I think our defense in the second half [was key to the win]. We were down two when we came out and we played with energy and passion, got some stops, and finally made some shots, which has been a bit of an issue this weekend.” Sienna Pollard was chosen player of the game for the Mariners, while Haley Cabral earned the laurels for the Chargers. In the final, the top-seeded Quest Kermodes pounded the 3^rd-seeded Douglas Royals 76-48. The Kermodes dominated from the start, leading 18-13, 37-18 and 50-29 at the quarters. “We just didn’t want to give them an opportunity, and we tried to take everything away from them,” said Quest coach Dany Charlery. “It’s playoffs and we didn’t expect to win by so much, but we put ourselves in a position to do so.” Shayna Cameron was chosen player of the game for the Kermodes, while Nanaya Miki earned the laurels for the Royals. Shayna Cameron paced the Kermodes with 17 on 7-17 from the floor, 2-4 from the arc, 1-1 from the line, 9 boards, 4 assists and 5 steals.
