In the quarterfinals, the 3rd-seeded Douglas Royals edged the 6th-seeded host Camosun Chargers 61-56. The Royals led 15-10 after one quarter. The score was knotted at 29 at the half. The Royals led 43-39 after three quarters. Amonda Francis paced the Royals with 24 points and 15 boards. Ella Goldschmid and Melissa Van Dyk combined to score 20 for the Chargers. Neither squad led by more than seven. Francis was chosen player of the game for the Royals, while Goldschmid earned the laurels for the Chargers. In the other quarterfinal, the 5th-seeded Kwantlen Eagles dusted the 4th-seeded Quest Kermodes 64-48. The Eagles led 13-8 after one quarter. The score was knotted at 25 at the half. The Eagles led 45-36 after three quarters and took command in the final frame. Jessica Villadiego led the Eagles with 14. Jeannine Yngreso added 13 and Samantha McPhail 12. Katrin Sandbichler led the Kermodes with 10. Eagles coach Dan Nayebzadeh said the difference was work ethic. “We’re a young team and the culture of the team is very competitive and they’ve been working hard as a team all year.” Villadiego was chosen player of the game for the Eagles, while Sandbichier earned the laurels for Quest. In the semis, the top-seeded Capilano Blues clocked the 5th-seeded Kwantlen Eagles 75-57 after leading 21-5, 34-19 and 63-37 at the quarters. Alynn McNeilly was chosen player of the game for the Blues after scoring 24. Jenn Bodnar added 20 on 4-5 from the line, 7 boards and 7 assists. Sara Kurath and Jeannine Yngreso scored a combined 28 for the Eagles. Kurath was chosen player of the game for Kwantlen.
In the other semi, the 2nd-seeded Vancouver Island Mariners dumped the 3rd-seeded Douglas Royals 70-58. The score was knotted at 14 after one quarter. The Mariners led 38-34 at the half and 56-52 after three quarters. Shayna Worthington was chosen player of the game for the Mariners after scoring 20 and nabbing 9 boards. Jocelyn Jones led the Mariners with 23 on 13-18 from the line. Amonda Francis paced the Royals with 29 points and 12 boards and was chosen player of the game for Douglas. In the bronze medal match, the 3rd-seeded Douglas Royals dispatched the 5th-seeded Kwantlen Eagles 70-58 after leading 13-9, 30-15 and 44-26 at the quarters. Patti Olsen was chosen player of the game for the Royals, while Amber-Lee Kavanagh earned the laurels for Kwantlen. Olsen said “we were more prepared and wanted it more.” Royals coach Curtis Nelson said “we were pretty fatigued but one thing’s for sure, our hearts were not fatigued.” Patti Olsen paced the Royals with 18 on 8-16 from the floor, 1-4 from the arc, 1-4 from the line, 7 boards and 4 assists. In the final, the 2nd-seed top-seeded Capilano Blues dumped the 2nd-seeded Vancouver Island Mariners 66-55 to win their first title in 15 years. The Mariners led 15-12, 24-22 and 44-40 at the quarters. The Mariners effectively attacked off the dribble, while the Blues relied heavily on their three-point shooting. Jocelyn Jones kept drawing fouls, eventually forcing Capilano’s Alynn McNeilly and Hayley Boulier to foul out. Jones, who was chosen player of the game for the Mariners and tournament MVP, said “we just knew that the last ten minutes were all or nothing.” Jenn Bodnar was chosen player of the game for the Blues.
