Brandon’s Patrick Jebbison becomes the third player to win the Moser for the second year in a row. The 6-4 forward averaged 21 ppg and 8 rpg on the season. “Patrick has been very steady and consistent the past three years and has scored about the same each season,” said coach Jerry Hemmings. “We moved him outside a little more this year to make us a better team and he responded very well.” The Toronto native led the Bobcats to their third consecutive CIAU title. The fifth-year arts major can take over a game, Hemmings said. “We were playing Slippery Rock (Pa) at the York U tournament in December and we had trouble getting going. Late in the game, we were trailing and Patrick hit 10 baskets in a row and we managed to pull it out 93-90.” He finished that game with 37 points.
Regina’s Ken Murray was named recipient of the Aberdeen.
Guelph’s Tim Mau was selected the Mullins winner. A 6-7 forward.
Joining Jebbison as 1st team All-Canadians were: Chris Biegler (Regina); John Stiefelmeyer (Western Ontario); Peter Gordon (U.P.E.I.); and Tom Schneider (Waterloo). …………………………………………………… Biegler finished 2nd in Moser balloting. “I worked hard all year and it’s reflected in the awards I won,” said Biegler. “The coaches follow you in the media and know all about you.” …………………………………………………… Stiefelmeyer led nation in scoring with 25.9 ppg. …………………………………………………… Schneider, a 6-0 guard from Kitchener St. Jerome’s, averaged 23.5 ppg and set a school record for free throws with 196. He also hit 67 treys. “This was a tough year for me being that it was the weakest team I’ve been on in my five years here,” said Schneider. “There weren’t many other players who could take on a scoring role on a given night. I got frustrated a little bit with it at times, I just tried to keep my head on my shoulders and make sure that every night I came out and did what I was supposed to do otherwise I knew that we might go down the toilet.” Coach Don McCrae said “particularly in light of the early season struggle, when we weren’t a very good team, period, it was identified by everybody that Tom was the only guy the Warriors had. He got shocked a few times with the special attention he was getting. He really got beat up. We tried to educate him and give him a feel for that-it was a little traumatic for a while. He certainly adapted, but that only set him up for the regular season because his pre-season was so outstanding.” Schneider led the Warriors to an 11-3 OUA record, good for third place in the west division.
The 2nd team selections were: Spencer McKay (Victoria); John Vigna (Calgary); Whitney Dabney (Brandon); David King (Bishop’s); and Grant McDonald (Acadia). …………………………………………………… Vigna shared the Canada West player of the year award with Saskatchewan’s Sheldon Ryma.
Honorable mention was awarded to: Sheldon Ryma (Saskatchewan); Geoff McKay (Victoria); Tim Mau (Guelph); Mike Scotten (Queen’s) and Mark Harvey (Toronto)
