In its opener against Portugal, Canada loses 62-54 after falling behind early. Nikki Johnson scored 18, Terri-Lee Johannesson and Justine Ellison each added 10. “We are disappointed in today’s result,” said coach Michele Belanger. “We played outstanding defense but our offensive execution just wasn’t there.”

Canada evened its record at 1-1 by defeating Sweden 88-82 in overtime. Justine Ellison forced overtime with a pair of free throws to knot the score at 72 with no time on the clock. “This was a must win for us,” said coach Michele Belanger. “The team showed great poise down the stretch. Justine coolly came through for us at the end.” The teams were tied at 72 after regulation. Ellison finished with 31 points.

Justine Ellison scored 24 to lead Canada past Japan 78-46. Liz Hart added 12. “While the victory was definitely pleasing, not qualifying for the medal rounds is very disappointing,” said Belanger. “We certainly felt that we could play well enough to contend for a medal. Unfortunately, the tie-breaking system was such that we will have to be content with shooting for ninth.”

Canada, Portugal and Sweden finished (2-1) in their pool. In point differential in games between the trio, Canada was (-1), having lost to Portugal by eight, while beat Sweden by seven. Portugal finished (+1), while Sweden was even. Canada is relegated to the 9th-16th consolation round.

In the 9-16th quarterfinals, Canada applied considerable pressure on the South Africans in a 108-56 rout, taking a 49-36 lead at the break and forcing a series of early turnovers in the second half. Seven players scored in double figures. Andrea Constand led the team with 15 points and 7 boards. Karalyn Church added 14 points and 12 boards. Karen Jackson scored 14, Terri-Lee Johannesson 14, while Justine Ellison grabbed 7 boards. “I was pleased with how we bounced back after such a disappointment the day before,” said Belanger. “The second half was the best all-around effort that we have put together to date in this tournament.”

In the 9-12th semis, Canada defeated China 93-59.

In the ninth-place playoff, Canada defeated Brazil 90-65.
