In the finals, Winnipeg defeated Brandon 55-54; 71-54 (2g-0).
In game one, Winnipeg nipped Brandon 56-54 in a see-saw battle. Brandon led 31-23 at the half before Winnipeg rallied to tie it and eventually prevail. Beth Cochran led Winnipeg with 21 points, including 16 in the second half. Jill Mathez added 10 and Val McKenzie 10. Janet Lumsden and Laurie Wilson each scored 10 for Brandon. Winnipeg coach Tom Kendall noted that “if we couldn’t get it into Cochran in the first half, we’d still try and force it or we’d take the 20 footer. In the second half, we moved the ball much better and hit her on the second or third phase of our offence where they couldn’t double or triple-team her.”
In game two, Winnipeg defeated Brandon 71-59 despite freshman Beth Cochran’s foul troubles. With Cochran on the bench, the Wesmenettes perimeter shooters took control of the affair. She picked up her third foul at 12:36 of the first half and her fourth just 3:09 into the second half. Winnipeg led 28-26 at the break but their defence forced Brandon to one side of the floor and took over in the second half. Cochran finished with 22 points and 14 rebounds, while point guard Jill Mathez tossed in 19. Karen Pearson led Brandon with 17. “Our perimeter people often play within themselves,” said Kendall. “But tonight, with Beth off the floor, they started to shoot with confidence – simply because they had no other choice. …Offensively, when Beth was off the floor, we put three perimeter people at the top of the triangle and just worked the ball until we could get a shot.”
