In the deciding contest, Winnipeg prevailed 61-59 as freshman Bea Dyce iced it at the free line by hitting a free throw with four seconds to play. Winnipeg rallied from a 38-32 halftime deficit. “This game did a lot more for women’s basketball that it did for my ulcer,” said Winnipeg coach Tom Kendall. ‘I knew we could come back after we came back from 17 points on Saturday.” Brandon led 24-14 after ten minutes of play. Winnipeg cut the margin to six at half-time. Brandon moved ahead 42-34 after three minutes in the second half but Winnipeg cranked up its defence and Diana Quartel took over inside, while Bea Dyce shut down Janet Lumsden from the perimeter. Winnipeg promptly held Brandon scoreless for eight minutes and tied the game at 42 with 12:10 to play. The teams traded buckets until Quartel fouled out with 2:22 to play. Then Linda Edwards fouled out for Brandon. Cheryl Kryluk hit two free throws to put Winnipeg ahead 56-55 with 2:07 to play. Kryluk hit a field goal. Karen Pearson replied for Brandon to cut the lead to 58-57 with 1:10 to play. After a Winnipeg turnover, Dyce fouled Chris Hogan, who put Brandon ahead 59-58. Pearson committed a lane violation on the in-bounds pass, allowing Winnipeg to take control of the ball and run the clock down to four seconds when Dyce was fouled by Lumsden and hit one of two free throws. “I just wanted to concentrate on making on the shots,” said Dyce. “I knew the importance of the shots but I wasn’t nervous at all.” Posnick finished with 22 points for Winnipeg.
