In the finals, Winnipeg defeated Regina 55-29; 59-58 (2g-0).
In game one, Winnipeg thrashed Regina 55-29, although the teams were tied at 23 at the half. Each shot .300 from the floor in the first half but the Wesmenettes limited Regina to one field goal in the second half playing ‘area coverage’ as opposed to a zone. “Girls play area coverage, boys play zone,” explained Winnipeg coach Vic Pruden. Dori McPhail led Winnipeg with 19 points and 6 rebounds, while hitting 9-14 from the floor. Sharon Douglas paced Regina with 11. Winnipeg outshot Regina .400 to .210. The Cougars hit 9-42 including 1-24 in the second half. Regina coach Sue Higgs noted that “we lost our poise badly, something we’ve been trying not to do.” Higgs told the Regina Leader-post that “we started the second half stealing the ball a lot but either made a violation or threw it away. We didn’t make the shots. It was kind of a strange game. We did some things well. We played a good defensive game but we shot poorly. They played a zone and we haven’t played a zone defence all year. We’re been practicing it but it’s not the same thing.”
In game two, Winnipeg nipped Regina 59-58 as Dori McPhail scored 18 and Debbie Steele 14, while grabbing 11 rebounds. “This wasn’t one of our better games but the girls hung in there on sheer determination,” coach Vic Pruden told the Winnipeg Free Press. Sharon Douglas scored 27 for Regina, including 8-14 from the floor and 11-13 from the line. Winnipeg committed 24 turnovers and Regina 14. The Cougars outrebounded the Wesmenettes 32-18. “We’ve had psychological hang-up with Winnipeg and once the girls faced the problem, it was a lot easier to deal with,” Cougars coach Sue Higgs told the Free Press. She told the Regina Leader-Post that “I feel pretty good about the game even though we lost. It was a really good game, a well-played game. It could have gone either way.” She added that committing just 14 turnovers “was pretty impressive for us because we’ve had trouble with turnovers all year. It was nice to see an improvement in that area.”
