After the season, athletic director Mark Arnett confirms that Jerry Hemmings will not return to the helm of the Brandon Bobcats and will instead become a full-time teacher in the physical education faculty. His duties are to be assumed by former Brandon assistant Ron McCutcheon. Arnett said Hemmings appointment to the staff of Canada’s FISU team prompted the change. The job has kept Hemmings out of the country for much of the past few months, unable to recruit or
prepare for the coming year. “I don’t think he felt he could do justice to both jobs,” said Arnett. McCutcheon, 38, accepted the job of acting head coach in June after one full season as a Hemmings assistant and five years of high school coaching in Portage La Prairie. “Jerry needs a year off,” said McCutcheon. “He has said it’s my team, and that’s the only way I’d do it.” McCutcheon fully expects Hemmings to resume coaching the Bobcats in the 1990-91.
