In the sudden-death semi, Winnipeg defeated Lakehead 81-67 as freshman guard Perrie Scarlett scored 20 and led the Wesmen in the second half by driving the paint and dishing the ball to open teammates inside. Ex-Gordon Bell teammate Maurice Seales scored 28, including 16 in the first half. Winnipeg was ahead 38-36 at the break. Scarlett noted that “in the first half (Seales) came in cookin’ and just started going. I wasn’t playing that hot. Then, at the half, when I saw that he got 16 points, I said to myself: I gotta start cookin’.” Anthony Kauffman added 18 for Winnipeg while Mark Johannson added 14.
In the finals, Brandon defeated Winnipeg 91-68; 95-81 (2g-0).
In game one, Brandon throttled Winnipeg 91-68 and dominated the boards 38-24. Jude Kelly scored 23 and John Carson 21. Brandon led 46-40 at the half. Art Koop paced Winnipeg with 15. Mark Johannson added 10.
In game two, Brandon prevailed 95-81 as Jude Kelly scored 21, John Carson 19 and Earl Roberts 16. Brandon was ahead 44-35 at the half and shot nearly .700 from the floor. Grant Greenwood led Winnipeg with 18, Gord Tucker added 16. Winnipeg coach Bruce Enns noted that “we played as well as we could.” Carson, from North Carolina, was a First Team All-Canadian each and every year from 1982-83 through 1986-87. Brandon University legends Patrick Jebbison and Keith Vassell run a distant second with two First Team nods each. Carson was dominant during his university career as evidenced by his being named a tournament all-star 21 times and tourney MVP 11 times. Named Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Player of the year for four successive years from 1982-86, he was also named a CIAU Final 8 All-Star in 1983-84.
