In the finals, Lakehead defeated Manitoba 66-59; 65-60 (2g-0).
In game one, Lakehead edged Manitoba 66-59, taking control in the second half. The Bisons had led 30-26 at the half, but Lakehead opened the second frame with a 14-3 run to take command. Mel Bishop scored 22 for the Norwesters, while 7-1 centre Jim Zoet scored 20 and grabbed 14 boards. Doug Freeth led Manitoba with 14 points. Greg Daniels and Grant Watson each added 12.
In game two, Lakehead defeated Manitoba 65-60 as Jim Zoet tossed in 30, including 23 in the second half, along with 15 boards. Mel Bishop added 15 points. “Zoet was superb,” said Manitoba coach Don Hunter. “I’ve never seen anyone play so well. He was 9-12 from the field, dunked the ball a few times and started using the sky hook on us.” Manitoba, meanwhile, “shot atrociously,” Hunter added. Manitoba shot .360 from the floor, including a dreary 3-15 performance by Martin Riley. Grant Watson led the Bisons with 16 points. Doug Freeth added 14 and Greg Daniels 10, including 5-13 from the floor. The Bisons led 28-25 at the half.
