The Capers led 43-41 after three quarters. Kelsey Hodgson hit three three-pointers in a 17-point third quarter as the Capers rallied from a halftime deficit. “Big-time players show up at big-time moments and we needed her,” said Cape Breton coach Fabian McKenzie. “She certainly played well. There were other people around her, but Kelsey got hot. We got her the basketball and she did her thing.” The Tigers were even at 51-51 with six minutes to go until Hodgson made a three to open a lead the defending-champion Capers — 19-1 and unbeaten at home — wouldn’t surrender. Dalhousie took advantage of some cold shooting from the host team for an 11-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. April Scott made two quick buckets early in the second quarter as the Tigers expanded the lead to nine. CBU cut the Dalhousie lead to 27-24 at the half. “The first half we talked about just managing the jitters,” said McKenzie. “When you get the bye situation you always have that first half that’s a bit wonky. We came out in the second half more relaxed.” Cape Breton got even in the third quarter on a Hodgson trey and a baseline drive from Kari Everett. Another Hodgson triple on the next trip had Cape Breton up for the first time 32-31.         In the final, the top-seeded Cape Breton Capers dumped the 3rd-seeded Saint Mary’s Huskies 69-60 after leading 22-19 and 42-35 at the half. The score was knotted at 50 after three quarters. Saint Mary’s, looking for its first AUS championship in 33 years, trailed for most of the contest before tying the game late in the third quarter thanks to AUS Rookie of the Year Justine Colley. She capped off a strong quarter of play by hitting a three-pointer to knot things up at 50-50 with 1:23 remaining in the period, the only quarter the Huskies outscored the Capers, 15-8. But the CBU women pulled away again early in the fourth quarter as Kari Everett hit the basket twice to put the Capers up 54-50 and the home team never again relinquished the lead in front of an orange-clad, cheering, capacity crowd. The Capers were leading by just five points, 63-58, with just under one minute remaining, when AUS MVP Kelsey Hodgson hit a big three-point shot for a 66-58 CBU advantage. Everett said the homecourt advantage was an asset. “It’s an honour to be able to play here. Our fans here in the community are always great to us. We work hard for them all year and they’re supporting us through ups and downs. And it’s nice to bring home a banner in front of them.” Everett called the tournament MVP nod a “big deal” but added the personal honour is eclipsed by the banner. “A second banner and a chance to go back to nationals. That’s the most important part.” Capers coach Fabian McKenzie said “it was just a phenomenal game based on heart for me. That’s what did it. And composure down the stretch helped. Karmen Brown and Kari Everett really stepped up big for us in the second half. And we made some big stops. Nikki Works was unbelievable defensively. It was awesome. Any team that gets here is pretty tough and Saint Mary’s gave us an unbelievable battle today. But we used a little bit of depth and we had the veteran composure of having been in a big game like this. Down the stretch we were able to maintain some composure and play pretty solid.” Saint Mary’s coach Scott Munro said “the girls battled hard and to get to that stage today to play for a championship was great.” A Hodgson trey had the hosts up 10-5 and they led by as much as seven before the Huskies clawed back. Everett’s three-pointer in the last minute put Cape Breton up 22-16, but Rebecca Nuttall answered from the corner at the buzzer to bring SMU to within three. With Hodgson on the bench for much of the second quarter, Everett and Brown led the offence as the Capers extended their lead to nine. Colley had SMU’s last two baskets to make it 42-35 at the half. Kari Everett paced Cape Breton with 23 on 8-13 from the floor, 1-1 from the arc, 6-8 from the line, 8 boards and 4 assists. Kelsey Hodgson added 21 on 7-14 from the floor, 3-6 from the arc, 4-5 from the line, 4 boards and 4 assists.
