In the semis, the Dalhousie Tigers edged the St. FX Xavierians 67-62.
In the other semi, the top-seeded host New Brunswick Red Bloomers dumped the 4th-seeded St. Mary’s Huskies 60-54 as Laura Swift scored 23 and Jackie Flieger 14. The Red Bloomers led 26-24 at the half. Lori Messer paced the Huskies with 17. Jad Crnogorac added 16 and Angie Brooks 14. Flieger hit a trey with 2:26 to play to put the Red Bloomers ahead to stay. Huskies coach Jill Healy said Fleiger hit “a tough shot.”
In the final, the New Brunswick Red Bloomers clipped the Dalhousie Tigers 72-57 as Jackie Flieger scored 17, Laura Swift 16, along with 10 boards, Krista Foreman 12 and Erin Savage 12. Renee MacKenzie paced Dalhousie with 20. Jennifer Clark added 17 and Carolyn Wares 14. Wares was hampered by a knee injury. “She was submarined and twisted her knee,” Dalhousie coach Carolyn Savoy told Canadian Press. “She came off and went back on later but was pushed from behind. When she went down, we were up by five points.” Wares returned in the second half but was ineffective. “UNB played very well,” said Savoy. “They executed. Other people hit open shots. It was disappointing not to have our team at full strength. The girls played with a lot of heart.” Dalhousie guard Jennifer Offman told the Dalhousie Gazette that the Tigers “in order t owin, we had t oget the ball inside (to Carolyn Wares, despite her limited mobility). In the second half, we didn’t get her the ball.”
