In the semis, the 3rd-seeded U.P.E.I. Panthers stunned 2nd-seeded Dalhousie 52-44 after befuddling the Tigers with a zone. Paula Edwards led the Panthers with 17 points and 12 boards. Sherry-Dawn Jones added 10, Libby Baldwin 9, Sonia Edwards 8, along with 11 boards, Colleen Rossiter 2, Tracy MacEachern 2, Cindy Doyle 2 and Debbie MacAloney 2. Alice Cerny led the Tigers with 13. “We didn’t go out playing our best,” Tigers coach Carolyn Savoy told the Dalhousie Gazette. “They were so excited by the belief that they could win that they became overanxious. They just couldn’t put the ball in the basket.”
In the other semi, the top-seeded University of New Brunswick Red Bloomers clipped the St. Mary’s Belles 70-56. Sandra Mumford led the Belles with 20. Michelle Gaunce added 12 and Bonnie Estwick 10.
In the final, Bonnie McKenzie drilled a 25-foot jumper with six seconds to play to give New Brunswick a 46-45 victory over the UPEI Panthers. The Red Bloomers led 26-21 at the half and by 11 in the third quarter but then suddenly began struggling with the Panthers 2-3 zone and committing several shot clock violations. Sherrydawn Jones nailed a bucket to give the Panthers their first lead with 25 seconds to play, setting the stage for McKenzie’s winner. A Sonia Edwards 20-footer at the buzzer bounded off the rim. The Panthers outrebounded the Red Bloomers 45-27. Sherrydawn Jones led the Panthers with 14. Sonia Edwards added 12, along with 17 boards, Paula Edwards 8, Libby Baldwin 4, Cindy Doyle 4, Debbie MacAlone 2 and Colleen Rossiter 1.
