        In the quarterfinals, the 5th-seeded St. Francis Xavier X-Men stunned the 4th-seeded Acadia Axemen 91-86. The X-Men led 23-20 after one quarter. The Axemen led 46-44 at the half. The score was knotted at 68 after three quarters. The X-Men began to pull away in the fourth, holding an 83-75 edge with 5 minutes to play and they took command down the stretch on a trey by Justin Andrew as the shot clock expired. X-Men guard Kevin Bercy was chosen player of the game, while teammate Davonte Provo was chosen defensive player of the game. Kevin Bercy paced the X-Men with 20 on 8-16 from the floor, 4-6 from the line, 10 boards, 6 assists and 3 steals.         In the other quarterfinal, the 6th-seeded Memorial Sea-Hawks stunned the 3rd-seeded Saint Mary’s Huskies 72-70 on a jumper by defensive player of the game Davion Parnsalu with 2.6 seconds to play. The Sea-Hawks led 20-10 after one quarter. The score was knotted at 33 at the half. The Sea-Hawks led 52-48 after three quarters on a buzzer-beating trey by Daniel Gordon. The Huskies pulled ahead in the fourth, but five unanswered points allowed the Sea-Hawks to tie things at 65-65 with just three minutes remaining. Osman Barrie gave the Huskies a 70-68 lead in the final minute but the Sea-Hawks had the answer in the form of Parnsalu’s pull-up. Sea-Hawk Nathan Barker was chosen player of the game. Daniel Gordon paced the Sea-Hawks with 24 on 8-17 from the floor, 3-10 from the arc, 5-7 from the line and 7 boards.         In the semis, the 5th-seeded St. Francis Xavier X-Men toppled the top-seeded Dalhousie Tigers 81-76. The score was knotted at 19 after one quarter. The Tigers led 37-30 at the half. But Davonte Provo hit a jumper to give the X-Men a 41-41 lead and player of the game Justin Andrew hit a deep trey as they expanded the margin to 62-52 after three quarters. An and-one by Sven Stammberger drew the Tigers with 4 with six minutes to play and then a trey by Ryan Harnett trimmed the margin to one. But a trey by Tristen Ross gave St. FX a 71-67 lead and though Alex Carson hit a trey with 59 seconds to play for Dalhousie, the X-Men held on for the upset. St. FX’s Kevin Bercy was chosen defensive player of the game. Justin Andrew paced the X-Men with 29 on 11-18 from the floor, 7-13 from the arc, 6 boards and 3 assists.         In the other semi, the 2nd-seeded University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds clipped the 6th-seeded Memorial Sea-Hawks 96-83 after leading 21-19, 46-35 and 66-57 at the quarters. Javon Masters paced the Varsity Reds with 20 on 7-18 from the floor, 0-4 from the arc, 6-8 from the line, 3 boards, 9 assists and 3 steals. Daniel Pitcher added 15 on 7-15 from the floor, 0-4 from the arc, 1-2 from the line, 7 boards, 2 assists and 2 steals.         In the final, the 2nd-seeded University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds edged the 5th-seeded St. Francis Xavier X-Men 84-81 to capture their first AUS title since 1967. The X-Men led 25-14, 46-39 and 62-61 at the quarters. The X-Men forced a turnover with 18 seconds to play but Kevin Bercy missed a layup and an opportunity for St. FX to take the lead. Javon Masters hit a pair from the line for the Varsity Reds. Davonte Provo answered with a trey for St. FX and Varsity Red guard Jesse Kendall promptly iced the win by hitting a pair of free throws. “It is so much hard work and time and effort that we, as a team, have put in,” Masters said. “We were down early to a phenomenal St. F.X. team and Coach Baker told us to never quit. The game is 40 minutes. It looked like the fatigue of three games in three days caught up to them. We just attacked. It was a gritty win. … I just think it was our mentality. We roll as a wolf pack. We run one through 12. We’re just trying to outwork teams – get them into the fourth quarter and have our fitness and depth take care of it. That’s what happened tonight.” The X-Men notched a 16-3 run in the first quarter and led by as many as 12 in the second by capitalizing on Varsity Red turnovers. The Varsity Reds clawed to within 53-48 in the second half on a trey by Kendall. Daniel Pitcher later hit a trey to close the gap to 3. An Ibrahima Doumbouya three-point play with 15 seconds on the clock trimmed the margin to one after three quarters. A Will Legere trey on the first shot of the final frame gave the Varsity Reds their first lead of the contest. Tyrell Leotaud was named player of the game, while Doumbouya was selected defensive player of the game. Javon Masters paced the Varsity Reds with 28 on 8-21 from the floor, 2-5 from the arc, 10-12 from the line, 8 boards and 4 assists.         The all-tournament team featured MVP Javon Masters (New Brunswick); Kevin Bercy (St. FX); Ibrahima Doumbouya (New Brunswick); Davonte Provo (St. FX); and Tyrell Leotaud (New Brunswick).

        After the season, Cape Breton turfs David Petrozeillo from the helm of the program, announcing that “both parties agreed that it was in their best interest to pursue other opportunities.” Director of Athletics John Ryan said “we are grateful for the dedication that Coach Petroziello has shown our program and we wish him all the best.” Petrozeillo said “I want to thank Cape Breton University for the opportunity to coach the men’s basketball team these past two years. I am forever grateful to the committed players and coaches who worked to build a foundation for the future. Their efforts and dedication will return the CAPERS to the top of the AUS in coming years. My family and I are excited about our next step, and we will always have some fond memories of our time on the Island.” Petrozillo was replaced by former Capers coach Matt Skinn, who was at helm of Cape Breton in 2012-13 when he took them to an AUS and was named the league’s coach of the year. Over 4 seasons as coach, he had an overall regular season record of 49-31 before leaving the program to become an assistant at the University of Calgary.
