In the semis, the top-seeded St. FX X-Men defeated the 4th-seeded New Brunswick Varsity Reds 81-77 as John Hatch scored 30, Al Phillips 15, Brent Baker 13, Chris Sellitri 10, along with 12 boards, McIver 9 and Adam 3. The Varsity Reds broke to an 8-0 lead but the X-Men rallied to a 42-35 lead at the half by shifting to a man-to-man defence from a zone. The X-Men built their lead to 15 in the second half but Scott Devine and Chris McCabe rallied the Varsity Reds to wihin 73-69. Hatch and Brent Baker iced the win with timely free throw shooting down the stretch, while the Varsity Reds missed a host of critical tosses from the line. St. FX outrebounded the Varsity Reds 37-21. Chris McCabe paced the Varsity Reds with 19. Scott Devine added 18, Scott Nicholson 16, Don McCormack 10, Paul Holder 10 and Tony Walker 2. Varsity Reds coach Don Nelson told The Brunswickan “any time you are outrebounded by that margin, you’re going to lose the ball game. We lost it on the boards and that’s where we’ve lost games all year. We just don’t have a team that is really strong in controlling our defensive boards and we got hurt badly on seconds and third shots versus X. And that kept them in the game, even though we shot a higher percentage.” Devine said the switch to man-to-man “changed our tempo and the tempo of the game. They started to accomplish what they want to and took us out of our offensive pattern. … It’s been our history to get down, find ourselves in a hole and pull ourselves back out of it. But this time, we just didn’t pull ourselves all the way out. You just can’t get down by that much to a great team like St. FX. It’s just not going to work.” The Varsity Reds (coached by Don Nelson, assisted by Phil Wright, manager Jeff Baird, assistant mananger Ross Antworth, assistant manager Mike Rouse, trainer Dave McDonald, statistician Althea Arsenault) also included Ed Crowe, Ted DeWinter, Steve French, Phil Guthrie, Bill Jarrett, Dale McIsaac, Mike Mooney, Mark Newell, Mike Sherrard and Al Tramley.

In the other semi, the St. Mary’s Huskies edged the Dalhousie Tigers 73-72. Rob Latter found Mike Williams for a layup with 11 seconds to go to give the Huskies a 73-70 lead. Rob Latter paced the Huskies with 27 on 10-13 from the floor, 7-9 from the line and 15 boards. Mike Williams added 14, Gary Bratty 12, Bob Oostveen 8, Greg Williams 5, Rod Buckland 4 and Nick Briggs 3. Pat Slawter paced the Tigers with 18. Bo Hampton added 16, Stan Whetstone 15, Steve Lambert 10, Bo Mallott 9, Ron Wright 2 and Mitch Paquin 2. The Tigers (coached by Doc Ryan) also included Al Ryan, Rob Baert, Pat Colley, Dave Fraser and Jeff Holmes.

In the final, Saint Mary’s trailed St. FX 35-34e at the half but rallied to defeat the X-Men 81-74 as Bob Oostveen scored 25, Gary Bratty 15, Rob Latter 13, Briggs 13, Gary Williams 9, Rod Buckland 9 and Ross 2. The Huskies opened the second half with a 6-0 run and build their lead to double-digits on a series of steals and runouts. The Huskies outrebounded the X-Men 36-33. John Hatch led St. FX with 18. Phillips added 17, along with 14 boards, McIver 15, Baker 8, Gayle 6, Sellitri 5 and Adam 4. The Huskies hit 31-68 from the floor and 19-26 from the line. The X-Men hit 28-61 from the floor and 18-27 from the line. Tournament MVP Rob Latter told The Brunswickan “it was tought to get up after (the semi) … We had problems getting psyched up this morning but after the first 10 minutes of today’s game, we came alive. … We were playing a slightly different defence in the second half. We switched to a tighter man-to-man and keyed on John (Hatch), as he’d hurt us in the first half. And we just worked harder. Those things won the game for us.”
