In the semis, the St. Francis Xavier X-Men nipped the Prince Edward Island Panthers 72-66 as John Hatch scored 20, Mark Brodie 20, Sellitri 14, Baker 8, Brown 6 and McIver 4. The Panthers led 35-34 at the half. Bill Redmond led the Panthers with 21. Chris Sumner added 18, Skeeter Mower 8, Curtis Brown 8, Bruce Campbell 4, Tejan Alleyne 4 and D Pinto 3. The Panthers (coached by Dave Nutbrown) also included Vinnie DiPinto, Mike McLaughlin, Tim McGarrigle, Steve Wilson, Guy McIsaac, Ron Valentine, Aion Pettigrew, Tejan Alleyne, Andy Evelyn and Greg Thorne. The X-Men hit .435 from the floor, while the Panthers were 27-71.
In the other semi, the St. Mary’s Huskies dusted the Dalhousie Tigers 119-90 as Lee Davis scored 36, Tom Kappos 18, Vickers 10, Ralph Draws 7, Smith 5, Williams 4 and Buckland 2. The Huskies led 26-10 early and 61-46 at the half. Tim Crowell led the Tigers with 27. Steve Lambert added 17, Pat Slawter 15, Stan Whetsone 11, Art Screaton 8, James Malott 6, Rogers Jones 4 and Tim Flinn 2. The Tigers (coached by Peter Ryan, assisted by Jim McCunn), also included Al Campbell, Phil Howlett, Andy Erickson, John McIntosh and John McNeil. The Huskies hit .610 from the floor, while the Tigers hit .440. St. Mary’s outrebounded Dalhousie 41-34.
In the final, the Saint Mary’s Huskies defeated the St. Francis Xavier X-Men 93-88 as Lee Davis scored 28, tournament MVP Tom Kappos 20, Rob Latter 18, Mark Vickers 13, Ron Blommers 10 and, Mark Vickers 13. Geoff McIver led the X-Men with 24. Mark Brodie added 19, Chris Sellitri 18, John Hatch 18, Greg Brown 5 and Brent Baker 5. St. FX led 11-4 early but the Huskies countered with a 7-0 run and took their first lead at 31-29. They led 48-45 at the half. St. FX led 74-68 with minutes to play but the Huskies capitalized on St. FX fouls to take an 82-81 lead with 3:30 to play. Davis hit a deep bomb and a bucket as the Huskies took command. The Montreal Gazette’s Michael Farber reported national team head coach Jack Donahue as saying that “rumour” had it that the Huskies had won the AUAA title. “I couldn’t find the score in my local paper. (Hockey’s Wayne) Gretzky had a cold, so they couldn’t find a space for it.”
After season, Dave Nutbrown is hired at Acadia. He had been coaching at UPEI.
