In the semis, St. FX defeated Saint Mary’s 96-94 in overtime as Mark Brodie scored 29 (also reported as 23), Gurunlian 14, McIver 12 and Hatch 10. Sullivan hit a jumper with three seconds to play in overtime to win it for the X-Men. St. FX coach Steve Konchalski told Canadian Press that “when we got Shawn (Parker), we knew he could score some points but he also showed tonight that he was the capabilities to be a good ballhandler.” Ron Blommers paced the Huskies 30, along with 12 boards. Mike Roberson added 21 (also reported as 24) and Murrell 16. The Huskies had trailed by as many as 14 in the second half. St. FX led 44-34 at the half. The score was knotted at 86 after regulation.
In the other semi, Acadia defeated New Brunswick 112-101 as Upshaw scored 35, Bo Hampton 26, Coldwell 14, Larry Hampton 13 and Don Ehler 12. The Axemen led 55-28 at the half, outrebounded UNB 42-19 and hit 10-15 from the line. Ken Amos led the Varsity Reds with 32. Devine added 22, Bob Aucoin 20 and Chris McCabe 17. Varsity Reds coach Don Nelson told Canadian Press that “we didn’t get to him (McCabe) enough in the first half. There were plenty of times when he was in the open but we didn’t get the ball to him. That was one of our problems all year. We didn’t use him as much as we should have. … We were beaten by a better team. We managed hang in there for the first 10 minutes but you’re playing a team that’s shooting 80% from the floor, it’s hard to beat them.”
In the final, St. FX edged Acadia 96-95 in overtime as Varouj Gurunlian hit two free throws with 22 seconds left to play. Acadia’s Larry Hampton missed a shot at the buzzer with two seconds to play and X’s Greg Brown nabbed the rebound. St. FX coach Steve Konchalski told Canadian Press that “has to be the biggest rebound Greg’s ever had. I can’t think of any that were bigger. … I think going into overtime (in the semis) helped us versus Acadia. That game with St. Mary’s drained all the emotion from us and we played a cool game today. Acadia plays a game where they love to run a lot and if you get caught up in the emotion, they can blow you out of the building. Our guys played a smart game today by keeping the pace at a slower level than Acadia likes.” New York product Mike Brodie led St. FX with 26, while nabbing 16 boards. National team member Varouj Gurunlian added 25, Tom Sullivan 17 and Geoff McIver 12. St. FX led 50-44 at the half. The score was knotted at 85 after regulation. Brodie said “before the game we decided we had to go inside a lot. By doing that, some of their big guys got in foul trouble and had to play a bit cautiously. When they started picking up fouls, we kept going after them.” Ted Upshaw led the Axemen with 22. Larry Hampton added 21, Ehler 20, Bo Hampton 17, Phil Coldwell 11. Acadia hit 21-28 from the line.
