In the semis, Acadia defeated Prince Edward Island 83-60 as Vic Soares scored 25, along with 16 boards, Mike Hazard 18 and Gordie West 12. Dave Arsenault led the Panthers with 27. Keith Strieter added 17.
In the other semi, St. FX defeated Saint Mary’s 81-72 after leading 39-37 at the half. Pat Adrien paced the X-Men with 23. Doc Ryan added 21, McGrath 15 and Green 10. Frankie White led the Huskies with 25. John Brown added 18.
In the bronze medal match, Saint Mary’s edged UPEI 79-77 as Rick Plato scored 27, Kappos 16, White 15, Brown 13, McFarland 8, Quackenbush 2 and Blommers 1. Keith Streiter led the Panthers with 28. Arsenault added 23 and Vince Murray 16. Butch Postma hit a bucket a fraction of a second after the horn sounded that would have forced overtime. The Huskies subsequently hosted the national championships and captured the CIAU title. The Huskies played the latter half of the season without Ron McFarland, who broke his foot in January. The Panthers (coached by George Berger) included Dave Arsenault, Dave Connolly, Keenan Courtney, Don Fernald, Dennis High, Colin McAdam, Dave McLeod, Vince Murray, Bruce Nicholson, Butch Postma, Lloyd Pullen, Chris Smith, Keith Streiter, Jim Whalen and Forbes.
In the final, Acadia defeated St. FX 93-81 as Mike Hazard scored 34 and Vic Soares 24, along with 17 boards. The Axemen led 50-49 at the half.
After the season, UPEI coach George Birger bailed for Brandon. He was replaced by assistant and former Panther point guard Kevin Feighrey, who’d graduated a year earlier.
