In the Nova Scotia semis, Acadia defeated Saint Mary’s 41-52; 55-48; 66-61 (2g-1). …………………………………………………… Saint Mary’s opened with a 52-41 victory over Acadia after taking a 24-19 lead at the half and dominating the boards. Sparked by point guard Baz Carew, Saint Mary’s was led by Brian Ross 18, Bill Mullane 13, George Leach 7, Robin Falconer 6, while Richards, Cooper and Burns were scoreless. The Huskies led 24-19 at the half. Acadia was paced by Jack Garrett 14, Jim Logue 9, Jim Mosher 10, Carl Webb 6 and Frank Davis 2, while Wilson, Bulmer and Fox were scoreless. …………………………………………………… In the second game, Acadia responded with a 55-48 victory. Leading 37-35, Acadia’s Jack Garrett hit six key points, two free throws and two outside jumpers to pull the Axemen ahead. Garrett finished with 25, Jim Mosher added 9, Jim Logue 7, Webb 6, Davis 5 and Bulmer 3, while Wilson, Fox and McIntosh were scoreless. Saint Mary’s was led by Bill Mullane’s 20 points. George Leach added 10, Brian Ross 8, Carew 4, Falconer 4 and Richards 2, while Burns and Cooper were scoreless. …………………………………………………… In the deciding contest, Acadia nipped Saint Mary’s 66-61 as the Huskies missed several key free throws down the stretch. Acadia shot 19-32 from the line, while Saint Mary’s was a pathetic 13-35. Acadia was ahead 22-10 at the quarter. Saint Mary’s was ahead 32-30 at the half and 48-46 at the three-quarter mark. Acadia was led by Jack Garrett 33, Jim Mosher 8, Jim Logue 7, Carl Webb 6, Wilson 6 and Don Fox 4. Saint Mary’s was paced by Brian Ross 23, Robin Falconer 17, Bill Mullane 10, George Leach 9, Basil Carew 1 and John Richards 1. The Huskies (coached by Frank Baldwin and managed by Harold Pheeney) also included Roy Cooper, Terry Burns, Lee and Ma Ho Kui.
In the other Nova Scotia semi, St. FX thrashed Dalhousie 67-45; 51-49 (2g-0). …………………………………………………… In the opener, St. FX prevailed 67-45 after going on a 20-7 lead in the third quarter to take control of a game they’d led by a scant 21-20 at the half. Bob Moran finished with 18, Portland, Maine-native and former semi-pro star Ed Hilton 13, Joe Sanborne 11, point guard Freeman Dulac 8, Homer Keenan 8, Rossignol 4, Nicholson 3 and MacKillop 2, while Connolly was scoreless. Tommy Dobson scored 12 to pace the Tigers. Bill White added 12, Ted Wickwire 8, Al Murray 6, Matheson 4 and Bob Douglas 3, while Tzagarakis, Wetherstone, Hopkins and Thompson were scoreless. The X-Men led 21-20 at the half. …………………………………………………… In game two, St. FX nipped Dalhousie 51-47; rallying from behind to knot the score in the final minute and then win it on a free throw and a bucket by Freeman Dulac and a Billy White field goal. Dalhousie had led most of way and was ahead 26-20 at the half. With ten minutes to go, Dalhousie was up by eight but St. FX tied it at 41 with five minutes to go. Dalhousie again pulled ahead 45-41 and then 47-43 before St. FX tied it and set the stage for Dulac’s heroics. Dulac finished with 15, Bob Moran 12, Ed Hilton 12, Joe Sanborne 10 and Homer Keenan 2, while Connolly and Nicholson were scoreless. Al Murray paced the Tigers with 17. Billy White 11, Tom Dobson 8, Bob Douglas 7 and Ted Wickwire 4. The Tigers (coached by Al Thomas and managed by D Thomas and T Bringloe) also included N Weatherson, B McKeen, Mike Tzagarakis, S Thompson, Dave Matheson, Rankin, MacKeen and J Hopkins.
In the Nova Scotia finals, St. FX defeated Acadia 60-51; 81-47 (2g-0). …………………………………………………… In game one, St. FX opened with a 60-51 victory in a game that featured nine ties, six lead changes and a 25-25 halftime score. St. FX had opened with an 8-0 run in the first but Acadia rallied to tie it at the half. Similarly, St. FX opened with a 6-0 run to start the second half but Acadia replied with its own 6-0 run and led 40-37 at the three-quarter mark. Bob Moran scored 22 for St. FX, Ed Hilton 12, Joe Sanborn 5, Tom Conley 3 and Homer Keenan 2. Acadia was paced by Jack Garrett 14, Jim Mosher 10, Carl Webb 8, Frank Davis 8, Marty Walsh 7, Wilson 4 and Bulmer 2. …………………………………………………… In game two, St. FX dominated as Bob Moran scored 29 before fouling out, including 17 in the first half, in leading his team to an 81-47 victory. St. FX was up 41-22 at the half. Ed Hilton added 10, Joe Sanborn 13, Freeman Dulac 12, Tom Conley 2, John MacKillop 4, Danny Nicholson 1 and Bob Connolly 1. Acadia was paced by Jack Garrett 18, Jim Logue 12, Jim Mosher 9, Carl Webb 4, Larry Wilson 3 and Frank Bulmer 2. The Axemen (coached by Bob Douglas) also included Frank Davis, George Fox and Dave MacIntosh.
In the NB-PEI league, U.N.B. and U.P.E.I. split their two games. Both teams finished 3-1 on the campaign but New Brunswick took the title and advanced to the Maritime finals by virtue of a 127-117 total in games between the pair. Legendary Varsity Reds coach Don Nelson was in his rookie year at the helm. (In Northeast Conference play, UNB finishes sixth but hosts the postseason tourney. In the semis, the Varsity Reds beat Washington State 79-51. In the final, the Varsity Reds lost 105-73 to Husson).

In the Maritime finals, St. FX d’d U.N.B. 77-58; 57-74 (T: 134-132).
In game one, St. FX opened with a 77-58 thrashing of New Brunswick after taking a 39-24 halftime lead. But UNB went on an 18-10 run in the third quarter to narrow the gap to 59-50 before St. FX took command. Bob Moran scored 29, including 17 in the first half, while Ed Hilton added 16, Freeman Dulac 13, Joe Sanborn 12, Conley 4, Keenan 2 and Nicholson 1, while Connolly, MacKillop, Marsh and Rossignol were scoreless. St. FX shot 15-21 from the line, while UNB was 16-29. New Brunswick was paced by Jim Milligan 20, including 15 in the second half, Jim Gorman 12, Ron Manzer 10, Bryant 5, Taylor 5, Porter 2 and Mackesy 2, while Thorpe, Vaughn and Whitema were scoreless.
In game two, New Brunswick prevailed 74-57 but St. FX took the two-game total point series by a count of 134-132 as the Red Raiders fell just short of a comeback. Leading 46-32 at the half, UNB dominated the second half but still came up short. Ron Manzer scored 17, Bryant 17, Milligan 15, Porter 15, Gorman 10, Taylor 9 for New Brunswick, while Taylor Mackesy, Thorpe and Vaughn were scoreless. St. FX was paced by Bob Moran 17, Ed Hilton 16, Joe Sanborn 12, Freeman Dulac 8 and Homer Keenan 4, while Conley, Connolly, MacKillop, Nicholson and Marsh were scoreless.
After the season, Angus MacFarlane is hired as coach of Mount Allison. MacFarlane had been coach of Verdun HS in Quebec.
