In the semis, Laval defeated Concordia 69-68. “That’s the best Laval has played us all season. It could be the best they’ve played against anybody this year,” Stingers coach Keith Pruden told the Montreal Gazette. “Still, we came back and a couple more minutes, maybe I would be a lot happier than I am right now.” Concordia got off to a slow start but battled back to within five, 30-25 at the half. They tied the score at 51 on two free throws by Marie-Helene Heroux with six minutes to play and went in front 56-53 on a fastbreak bucket by Patricia Demers. Concordia led 61-60 with a minute to play but the Rouge et Or made five trips to the foul line in the final minute and Genevieve Laporte and fifth-year vet Sophie Morin coolly drained 9-10 free throws. Jennifer Smith tried to force overtime with a three but she missed and while teammate Guylaine Blanchette put back the rebound, the Stingers fell a point short. “The first 10 minutes of the game tonight hurt us,” said Pruden, noting that Concordia was down 13. “I wouldn’t say it was inexperience was a factor, as much as negative experiences from past situations was. They didn’t have as much confidence in themselves as I do. To Laval’s credit, they played it pretty loose. They did what they had to do to beat us by not allowing us to get the ball inside as much as we would have liked. They played pretty good defence.” Forward Marie-Josee Lafleur led Laval with 16 points. Fulvia Moscini had 14 while Morin and Laporte each added 11. Morin was 5-6 from the line in the final minute. Heroux and Demers each scored 17 for Concordia. Blanchette added 9. Demers twice drained three-pointers to keep the Stingers in the chase. “I knew Concordia was too good of a team not to come back, but at the same time, we had something to prove,” said Laval coach Linda Marquis. “It’s been a tough year for us with all the injuries we had. We worked hard to win this one tonight.”
In the final, McGill defeated Laval 69-53. Martlets coach Lisen Moore told the Montreal Gazette that her troops were determined to win their way to the national championships as they captured their 18th-straight victory. “Was it difficult to get them up for the game? No. But it was a little difficult earlier on to keep the focus on tonight because of the atmosphere and people figure we would go in any case (as a wildcard). There was just so much talk about the nationals and we had to work to focus on tonight. We would have hated to go to the nationals being upset with a loss. I’m not one of those people who believe that you lose a game and you’re better the week after.” Vicky Tessier led the Martlets with 17 points, 6 boards and 6 steals, including four while McGill extended a 35-31 halftime lead to 48-33. Josee Deloretto added 13, point guard Jennifer Stacey 12 and Lindsay Stevenson 9, including 6 of McGill’s first eight in the second half. McGill shot 19-22 from the line. Josee St. Onge led Laval with 24. Cinthia Lacharite added 10.
