In the final, Bishop’s whipped McGill 64-49 as Melanie MacPhee scored 22, including 20 in the second half and 4-4 from the arc. Cynthia Johnson added 19, including 15 in the first half. “Those two had a great game offensively but basically we got the job done defensively,” Gaiters coach Andrea Blackwell told the Montreal Gazette. “We took a lot of different options away from McGill.” Jane Ross led the Martlets with 11. Debby Morse, Tracey Hayman and Tina Fasone each added 8.
After the season, Mike Hickey is reappointed coach at Concordia, replacing Louisa Zerbe, who quit after four years at the helm, in which she amassed a 5-37 league record. “My first priorities are to make women’s basketball here enjoyable again and to establish an elite program,” Hickey told the Montreal Gazette. “We want Concordia to be the class of the Quebec league, not only terms of winning, but through our involvement in the community at several levels. We want players who graduate from the program to return to be part of the program. Winning is not the only thing, but it is a byproduct of a quality program.” Hickey returned to Concordia last summer as sports information officer. He’d coached the Stingers from 1976-85, reaching four nationals and twice winning the Quebec title. Zerbe had quit, charging that the Concordia athletic department offered inadequate support for women’s basketball. The Stingers had finished (1-11) in regular season play, missing the playoff for the sixth consecutive year. Hickey expressed his intent to retain assistants Paddie Chiara; Paul Meaney and Richard Allen.
