French universities in Quebec downplayed sport as a legitimate activity, refusing to invest money in facilities and focusing on intramurals. In the 1970s, Montreal, Laval and Sherbrooke built facilities, while the University of Quebec began opening new campuses. With the emphasis on mass participation, Montreal withdrew from interuniversity competition. Through the 1980s, the focus became even more selective. Only one university (UQTR) had a men’s program, and only one (Laval) had a women’s program.
An unofficial league was played in 1970 and 1971, with teams from Macdonald, Montreal, Carleton, Sir George Williams and Loyola. In 1970, Macdonald won with a (7-1) record.
Officially, the league, then known as the ASUQ, was formed in 1971-72 with six teams: Bishop’s, Montreal; McGill; Laval; U.Q.T.R.; and Sherbrooke
