In the semis, UQAM stunned regular season champ Concordia 102-90. “Give UQAM a lot of credit,” said Concordia coach John Dore. “I don’t know what they shot from the field but they shot very well. They rebounded well against us. They set the tone. They were more aggressive. They made their shots. They’re very athletic and when you give an athletic team to make shots, they’re going to be tough to beat.” Samuel Johnson noted that the Citadins “came in ready. We expected them to start really hard, this being a semifinal at their place. All we wanted to do was match their intensity and that’s exactly what we did.” UQAM took lead early and extended it to 45-36 at the half after hitting 4-13 from the arc in the first frame. They opened the second half with a 14-5 run to take command. “What a game,” said Citadins coach Olga Hrycak. “We took on a team with so much experience and they took us out of our game a couple of times with their aggressive defence but we managed to keep our cool.” Bruno Visotzky-Bernier paced UQAM with 26 on 8-15 from the floor, 3-7 from the arc, 7-8 from the line and 5 steals. Samuel Johnson added 24 on 4-13 from the floor, 2-8 from the arc, 14-16 from the line and 9 boards. Claude Delmas-Merisier added 21 on 8-17 from the floor, 5-6 from the line and 6 boards. Joseph Atangana notched 12 on 5-6 from the floor and 10 boards. Marc-Olivier Beauchamp scored 10 on 4-5 from the floor. Kevin Boucher scored 5 on 2-4 from the floor and Renaldo Maignan 4 on 1-2 from the floor. Gilles Ysos and Hans Chalotin were scoreless. UQAM shot 32-64 (.500) from the floor, 6-21 (.286) from the arc and 32-47 (.681) from the line, while garnering 36 boards, including 10 on the offensive glass, 14 assists, 24 fouls, 12 turnovers, 9 steals and 4 blocks. In the other semi, Laval dumped Bishop’s 67-54 as Dominique Soucy scored 29 on 6-16 from the floor, 2-9 from the arc, 15-18 from the line and 6 boards. Jean-Philippe Morin scored 27 on 10-18 from the floor, 7-11 from the line and 7 boards. Jean-Michel Leblanc scored 5 on 1-2 from the floor. Simon Gauthier scored 1, while dishing 5 assists. Saliou Babou scored 2 and Pierre-Olivier Horth 2, while Marc-Andre Lefebvre, Marc-Andre Cote, Maxime Boutin, Patrick Lavoie, Mathieu Bilodeau and Zouhair Ahmed Amine were scoreless. The Rouge et Or hit 19-44 (.432) from the floor, 3-12 from the arc and 26-34 (.765) from the line, while garnering 31 boards, including 7 on the offensive glass, 11 assists, 24 fouls, 15 turnovers, 5 steals and 1 block. In the final, the University du Quebec @ Montreal Citadins stunned the Laval Rouge et Or 95-88 to earn the Quebec crown in just their third year in the league. Bruno Visotzky-Bernier led the Citadins with 28 on 9-17 from the floor, 6-10 from the arc, 4-5 from the line and 6 boards. Samuel Johnson added 26 on 7-13 from the floor, 2-6 from the arc, 10-13 from the line, 6 boards, 3 assists and 3 steals. Kevin Boucher scored 18 on 6-9 from the floor, 5-7 from the line and 10 boards. Claude Delmas-Merisier added 7 on 2-6 from the floor and 2-4 from the line. Marc-Olivier Beauchamp notched 7 on 3-6 from the floor and 4 steals. Joseph Atangana added 6 on 4-6 from the line and 5 boards. Gilles Ysos scored 3 and Hans Charlotin 0.
