In the regular season, McGill finished atop the standings with a (9-1) record. Eddie Pomykala took over as coach of the Redmen at midseason after Lionel Staples resigned to protest McGill’s admissions policies. A former assistant coach to Ken Shields for the Canadian national team, Pomykala was a member of Dawson College’s national championship team in 1975-76. He was a CCCA All-Canadian in 1977 and then for two years, a reserve guard at St. Francis Xavier. The Montreal native became the coach at Bishop’s in the 1984-85 season. He later co-coached the national junior team with Ken Olynyk in from 1989-91, including the world junior championships in Edmonton in 1991. After the season, Pomykala resigned and was named head coach at Bishop’s replacing Wayne Hussey. The McGill athletic department refused to reward the league’s coach of the year with a contract that Pomykala found vaguely acceptable. Pomykala told the McGill Daily that if an athletic tradition existed at McGill, it was “an invisible tradition.” Pomykala said the lack of support shown for varsity level athletics at McGill proved that “in an environment that stresses excellence, (there is) an acceptance of mediocrity.” And that is difficult for an athlete to perform fully when he is being constantly reminded that he must “play in the shadows.”
