In the sole semi, (2-7) Concordia stunned (6-3) McGill 65-59 as Leon Bynoe scored 32. Both coaches were left aghast at the officiating of John Elias and Ross, who the Montreal Gazette dubbed “Alfonse and Gaston.” Stingers coach Doug Daigneault said “I simply can’t believe what went on out there with the refs. They spend so much of their time blowing down the incidentals of contact and didn’t call any of the big ones, like when (Leon) Bynoe got hit under the basket. You could hear that on the other end of the gym.” The refs whistled 44 fouls on each team. Redmen coach Butch Staples said “it’s a real shame. All season we have good officiated games with Concordia and then it comes down to the biggest game of the year and they didn’t let us play.” The Redmen had beaten the Stingers three times during the regular season. The Redmen led 29-22 at the half. Redmen coach Butch Staples told the McGill Daily that the dynamic changed when post Dave Drazin, an import from the University of Vermont, picked up his fourth foul in the first minute of the second half. “David not being able to play was a big factor. With him gone for most of the second half, we were never able to predict the flow of play. They scored on the offensive boards.” With Drazin on the bench, the Stingers exploded with a 20-8 run. Bill Saban led the Redmen with 18. Drazin, Gord Brabant and Jeff Sahimerdan added a combined 29. Stingers assistant Mike Hickey said the backcourt play of Mark Soule and Frank Toqueri proved the difference. “Our guards handled the pressure. We were able to get the ball over halfcourt and into our big men.”
In the final, Bishop’s defeated Concordia 73-84; 81-59; 74-67 (2g-1).
In game one, Concordia stunned Bishop’s 84-73 after leading 32-29 at the half. Donovan Robinson paced the Stingers with 20. Leon Bynoe added 20 and Rich Hagens 17. Wayne Hussey (who simultaneously coached the distaff Gaiters during the season) led the Gaiters with 29. Ian MacLean added 18 and Dave Thornhill 10. Stingers coach Doug Daigneault told the Montreal Gazette that “Donovan was simply spectacular,” while his troops did a great job of containing Hussey. “We gambled by using the zone and the zone press late in the first half. We had to stop their shooting and force them further away from the basket.” In the second half, the Stingers “shifted back to man-to-man and frankly, I think they spent the half-time session trying to work out a way to beat the press.” Gaiters all-star Blair Shier did not play because of ankle ligament problems. Daigneault told the Montreal Star that “we did a great job on the boards and I think our different combinations confused Bishop’s.”
In game two, Bishop’s bombed Concordia 81-59 as Trevor Bennett, who started in place of injured starter Blair Shier, scored 25 and nabbed 17 boards. Wayne Hussey added 19 and Dave Thornhill 14. Gaiters coach Garth Smith said that after the opening game loss “we just worked and worked with Trevor on our inside game and that’s what turned it around for us today.” The Gaiters led 26-3 early and by as many as 31. Leon Bynoe led the Stingers with 21.
In game three, Bishop’s took the series with a 74-67 win after leading 30-29 at the half. Dave Thornhill paced the Gaiters with 27. Wayne Hussey added 19 and Trevor Bennett 16. Dan Pavilick led the Stingers with 20. Mark Soule added 13 and Leon Bynoe 12. Gaiters coach Garth Smith told the Montreal Gazette that “it was a very close game. Neither Trevor (Bennett) nor (Leon) Bynoe dominated the game as they did the first two games. The big difference was our shooting. We shot well over 50%.”
