In the semis, held in Lennoxville, McGill waxed the U.Q.T.R. Patriots 87-61 as Joey Farroba hit 18, Gerry Ostroff 15, Gordie Brabant 14 and Charlie Galbraith 13. “I think it was quite obvious who was going to win this one,” coach Lionel ‘Butch’ Staples told the Montreal Gazette. “We played a very disciplined game and our defence was a fine example of everyone helping one another.” Farroba contained national scoring champion Peter ‘Doc’ Ryan to 21 points, including 0-5 the first five minutes and 5-14 in the first half. McGill was ahead 51-24 at the break. Andre Vallerand added 11 for the Patriots. Farroba and Brabant shot the lights out against Trois-Rivieres’ zone. McGill broke to a 6-0 lead and extended the margin to 51-24 at the half. They led by as many as 37.
In the other semi, 6-7 Jim Akin exploded for 39 points to help Concordia overcome a three-point half-time deficit and defeat the Bishop’s Gaiters 94-81. Ron Puskarich added 20. Bishop’s was led by Charlie Doyle with 16 and Steve Mullie with 15.
In the final, McGill defeated Concordia 83-66 as Bill Holt scored a season-high 21, sixth man Gerry Ostroff 16 and Charlie Galbraith 15, former Boston State MVP Joey Farroba 13 and Gordie Brabant 12. The game was tied at 36 at the half but the Redmen exploded for an 11-0 run six minutes into the second half and led 61-46 on buckets by Holt and Ostroff. Graham Haig added 10. The Stingers never drew closer than 10. Concordia was led by Jim Akin; Doug Merlin and Ron Puskarich, each 14. The Redmen won with a “solid team effort,” said coach Butch Staples. “Concordia thought if they stopped Joey, Charlie and Gordie, they would stop us. But we’ve still got Gerry and Billy and those two showed just how valuable they are to this team.” The Redmen said they were determined to avenge a regular season loss to the Stingers to close out the season. “That loss left a bad taste in our mouths,” said Farroba. “We’d moved through the league pretty easily and began to take things for granted. That game showed us that Concordia was a team that could beat us. We played their game last time. We just couldn’t get going. I think losing was beneficial mentally. It was an extra psych.” Concordia coach Doug Daigneault told the Montreal Gazette that “we went out to stop Galbraith and Farroba and we made heroes out of those other two guys. If Jim (Akin) had shot better, maybe things would have been different.” Holt said the Redmen were ready for the nationals. “We played a well-rounded and disciplined game and I think we’ve returned to our early season form.” Staples said team defence and good shot selection proved the difference. “They scored against us but we didn’t give them any real break. And Gerry and Gilly played an outstanding game.” Redmen coach Butch Staples told the McGill Daily that “we shot 60% from the floor and had only six turnovers so actually we were doing everything I could ask for. Concordia just played well and the Stingers scored more points from the free throw line than us.” Joey Farroba said it “was a great team effort. Fifteen guys worked very hard for this.”
