In the quarterfinals, Queen’s edged Lakehead 69-66 as Angela Van Richter scored 19, Cathy Amara 16 and rookie Cheryl Hunt 12. Jaylene Morrison added 7 and was chosen player of the game after running the Gaels offence with aplomb. Queen’s led 40-34 at the half. “We scored in virtually every way possible and I think that was the key,” said coach Dave Wilson. “We got the three pointers and then we pounded the ball inside. The kids did a good job of getting the ball to Angela. She got all her points from inside.” The Norwesters (coached by Stu Julius) included Donna Foreman, Allison Smith, Amy Pinnegar, Robin Lawrence, Jacqueline Field, Katharine Masun, Paula Ashby, Michelle Black, Jackie Shaw, Sarah Simpson, Vicky Young and Leonarda Altiehi.
Laurentian dumped McMaster 68-44. The Marauders (coached by Theresa Burns) included Lisa Thomaidis, Carla Vesprini, Tara Embrick, Alison Seow, Shelley Vanderbeld, Sarah Lupton, Jennifer Sutherland, Nancy Ganovsky, Nicky Brunhuber, Catherine Siksay, Campanella and Wendy Merritt.
Toronto throttled Brock 73-44 as Justine Ellison scored 21. Toronto led 9-0 early and 37-29 at the half. The Blues hit 27-57 from the floor, while the Badgers were 14-48. Wendie Nutt paced the Badgers with 12. Tambrina ‘Tammy’ Naughton added 10 and Sylvia Graham 5. Badgers coach Chris Critelli told the St. Catharines Standard that “we’re a young team and we just froze. … You’ve got to outshoot a zone and we just didn’t hit anything from outside. … Usually we’re getting 20 from Tammy and 15 or so from Wendie. But we’d also get 10 from (Sara) Montague or Sylvia (Graham). But we just didn’t get that kind of balance tonight.” The Badgers (coached by Chris Critelli, assisted by Karen Reinhardt) also included Jennifer Firmani, Laura Hollis, Susan Harrington, Carolyn Johnson, Carla Biesenthal, Natasha Meredith, Sarah Punch, Crystal Greig, Heather Wittland, Jennifer Lowry and Natasha Danschinko.
In the last quarterfinal, Western defeated York 69-63. The Lions (coached by Bill Pangos) included Karen Jackson, Shannon Carey, Nadine Barnes, Sue Bray, Maya Habash, Scarlett Kristan, Barbara Watters, Erin Smith, Maria Roser, Jana Kridlova, Adina Franceschino, Shera Nixon, Leesa Barnes, Christina Dickson and Collette Martin.
In the semis, Toronto dumped Western 80-66 as Sharon Butler scored 26.
In the other semi, Laurentian dumped Queen’s 54-41. Laurentian led 23-22 at the half. “It was a very solid performance for us,” said coach Dave Wilson. “We had opportunities to win the ball game. We just went a little flat down the stretch in our shooting. Some shots didn’t go that could have kept us in the ball game.” Sue Stewart paced Laurentian with 18. Jaylene Morrison and Cheryl Hunt each scored 11 to lead the Gaels.
In the bronze medal match, Western defeated Queen’s 74-60. “They were really tough,” said Queen’s coach Dave Wilson. “I’ve never had so many people that I didn’t know come out of the stands and say to me, ‘your team was terrific’. They did the things we asked them to do. It’s very difficult to control all of your shooting and that was probably the difference. But we played with a lot of character, a lot of poise.” Queen’s led 38-36 at the half. “We scored well in transition, we shut them down in their running game and we didn’t allow their presses to affect us, which is a big part of their offence,” said Wilson. “In the second half, we hit a flat spell where we didn’t score for a long period of time. They hit their shots in the last four or five minutes. We were a little tight in our shooting. We just couldn’t get the ball to fall through the hole.” Cathy Amara led Queen’s with 15. Cheryl Hunt added 14. The Gaels (coached by Dave Wilson) also included Jaylene Morrison, Stephanie Glancey, Jessica Bitterman, Stacey Goulding, Ginger Howell, Stephanie Jamieson, Wendy Moon, Angela von Richter, Sharlene Miles, Cristen Gleeson, Colleen Duncan, Talya Barrie and Megan Vrancart.
In the final, Laurentian edged Toronto 64-60 as Dianne Norman, Sue Stewart and Joy McNichol shredded the Toronto defence. “We were very apprehensive in the first half,” Blue forward Laurie Pinkney told the Varsity. “We were afraid to make any passes to the post. Certainly we weren’t very sharp defensively in the first half. We stopped them a little bit better in the second half, and then we just ran out of time.” Justine Ellison led the Blues with 17. Pinkney added 9.
