In the final, Toronto clobbered Laurentian 61-34. “We played perfect basketball for three games in a row,” Blues coach Michele Belanger told the Varsity. “We opened up the game with a lot of confidence and a lot of faith. We knew we could beat them.” The Blues avenged their only two regular losses by dusting the Voyageurs. “Before (in the two season losses to Laurentian), we just didn’t play a complete 40 minutes,” said Belanger. Justine Ellison paced the Blues with 18, while nabbing 6 boards. “she has been playing with a lot of injuries all year,” said Belanger. “She’s one of the toughest players I’ve ever met, and she’s really matured as a player.” Laurel Johnson added 14 for the Blues and Heather Marlborough 7. “The three (Ellison, Johnson, and Marlborough) were obviously outstanding and everyone else just did a really good job, very solid,” Belanger said. Belanger told the Kingston Whig-Standard that the Laurentian mystique was over. “I think they talked themselves out of it. We took the monkey off our backs, packed him in a suitcase and let’s hope he’s been shipped out somewhere, far away, never to come back. … This is the first time that we’ve actually pulled it out of the bag and played solid for 40 minutes. They didn’t think about anything else.” The Blues ripped off a 14-2 run to take a 23-10 lead. They expanded their lead to many as 20 in the second half as Voyageurs Joy McNichol and Dianne Norman fouled out, and then notched a 14-0 run to take a 56-22 lead. “We boxed out for the first time in eons against this team,” Belanger said.
After the season, Marg Jones resigned at Carleton to concentrate on her family. “There’s a number of reasons why I gave it up (coaching at Carleton). The job I had simply wasn’t compatible with being a mother,” Jones told the Charlatan. Jones was replaced by former Ravens men’s all-star Alex Overwijk.
