In the quarterfinals, Lakehead dumped Queen’s 71-51 as Donna Foreman scored 15. Vicki Wilson and Jennie Laughton each scored 14 to pace Queen’s. The Golden Gaels (coached by Dave Wilson, assisted by Tim Orpin) also included Jaylene Morrison, Erica Hollingdrake, Ainsley Geddes, Stephanie Jamieson, Kim Spence, Tanya McIntyre, Kristine Greenlaw, Leigh Chalmers and Trina Rasmussen.
The Western Mustangs whipped the Ryerson Rams 71-42. The Rams (coached by Theresa Burns) included Katie Bonthron, Sandy Prince, Marie Verdun, Darcel Wright, Kathy Soce, Cindy Bouroutis, Lisa Hellmich, Tricia Eastman, Jennifer Jones, Barbara Mirani, Tina Blaskovic, Susan Davidson and Sonya Droumtsekas.
Laurentian defeated Brock 70-54 as Louise Belanger scored 17. Brock led 32-30 with one minute to play in the first half but turned the ball over three times as the Voyageurs took a 38-32 lead at the break. The Voyageurs took command with an 8-0 run to open the second half. Stacey Robertson led the Badgers with 14. Tammy Naughton added 12 and Anna DeTullion 10. Badgers coach Chris Critelli told the St. Catherines Standards that “we played great. We were awesome in the first half, almost flawless. … We just had a couple of letdowns and it hurt us.” The Badgers (coached by Chris Critelli, assisted by Karen Reinhardt) also included Heather Kurtz, Patti Mason, Georgia Kovich, Nancy Schuster, Sharon Kruis, Sherrie Davis, Wendy Nutt, and B.J. Potvin.
In the last quarterfinal, Toronto nipped McMaster 56-54 as Joan Stock scored 18, Pinkney 11, Marlborough 9, Scott 6, Ellison 4, Johnson 4, C Brown 2 and Blumenthal 2. “We thought going in that this was going to be a blowout and we played towards that goal for the first ten minutes but then I think we started to look ahead to (the semifinals) this weekend,” Blues coach Michele Belanger told the Varsity. The Blues took a 16-point lead in the first half but then “we started to give up a lot of offensive turnovers. The lack of intensity for 25 minutes in the match really hurt us. I am slightly disappointed in the way we played. We didn’t get a strong performance from some of our players. But the bottom line was that we won.” McMaster led 54-51 with a minute to play but Joan Stock notched a 15-footer and then Denise Scott blocked a Marauder shot. Stock was fouled and hit the front end of a one-and-one to tie the game. A scramble for a loose ball resulted in a tie-up, which led Marauders coach Tricia Winik fuming. Heather Marlborough attempted a trey and Denise Scott was fouled on the rebound, which again had Winik hopping. Scott hit two free throws to win it. “The officiating wasn’t too strong,” Belanger noted. Rachel Ellison told the Hamilton Spectator that “they were really hustling … Our defence was terrible. We couldn’t pull it together.” The Blues hit 22-53 from the floor, 2-4 from the arc and 10-17 from the line, while the Marauders were 22-48 from the floor and 10-14 from the line. Jodie Wallace led the Marauders with 21. Lerer added 12, Tish Jeffrey 10, Lisa Thomaidis 6, Kathy Brook 4 and Jen Dempsey 1. Marauders coach Tricia Hylland-Winik said “in my eyes this was as much a victory for us as it was for them. To take Toronto to the last seconds of the game – I’m very proud of our team.” Tish Jeffrey said “we had nothing to lose. We weren’t afraid of them. We shot great. Everybody rebounded and penetrated. The scores doesn’t show it but we won the game.” The Marauders (coached by Tricia Hylland-Winik, assisted by Michelle O’Keefe) also included Sue Baird, Leslie Buckley, Denise Greenwood, Judie Kitchen.
In the semis, Laurentian stomped Western 65-44.
In the other semi, Toronto clubbed Lakehead 67-49.
In the bronze medal match, Lakehead edged Western 70-68. The Mustangs (coached by Bob Delaney, assisted by Don Coleman and Bill Pargeter, and managed by Jeff Duncan and Jay Patel) included Deb Kraemer, Ilde Lubke, Michelle Mommersteeg, Ayodele Bygrave, Michele Vesprini, Ann Hurtibise, Lori Bartolotta, Dannie Newman, Heidi Preiner, Tricia Musselman, Maureen Spero, Debra Wilson, Leslie Meyers, Bili Pargeter, Jill Stiefelmeyer, Jody Titcombe, Erin Murphy, Nicole Bottineau.
In the final, Laurentian edged Toronto 62-57 as Sue Stewart scored 22. Denise Scott led the Blues with 23. “We had an absolutely phenomenal second half where we played almost perfectly,” Blues coach Michele Belanger told the Varsity. “We were down by 15 in the first half and that really hurt us. The crowd was outstanding but obviously not in our favour. If the game was in any other gym, the result would have been different.”
