In the quarterfinals of the eight-team tournament (first time held), Queen’s beat Western 68-60. The Mustangs (coached by Mary Riezebos, assisted by Peter Campbell, Paul Jones and Deanne Campbell, manager Janet Rerecich, assistant manager Laurann Col) included Nancy Lemon, Tracy DeSutter, Hester Westenberg, Linnea Campbell, Sandy Perryman, Nancy Unruh, Leslie Petter, Michelle Hopkins, Karyn Mitchell, Leslie Sims, Tanya Wheeler, Helen Murphy and Fran Steer.
The Laurentian Voyageurs thrashed the Guelph Gryphons 60-43 as Joy Bellinger scored 19 and Lori Kenopic 15. The Gryphons (coached by Karen Lee, assisted by Donna Veale, managed by Judy Impus and trained by Marianne Jeffery, SID Laurie Graham) included Cindy McMaster, Jocelyn Laviolette, Beth Pulsifer, Shelley Roberts, Jillian Foster, Tracey Vent, Joanne Hurd, Luci Clark, Teresa Conlon, Tracy MacLean, Linda Mataseje, Sue Van Beek.
The Brock Badgers thrashed the York Yeowomen 86-65 as Maureen Kelly scored 23, while nabbing 13 boards, Diane Hilko 14, Patty Stamps 13, Yvonne Doodeman 13 and Janice Joekel 12. The Badgers led 37-28 at the half. Patty Stamps told the St. Catharines Standard that “both teams seemed to go in spurts. Nobody seemed able to keep control of the game (until the last 10 minutes).” Kelly said “we just couldn’t seem to keep concentration and they just kept coming back.” Badgers coach Pat Woodburn said “it shows a lot of depth when we have five players in double figures, and one of them is a rookie at championship tournaments.” Paul Lockyer paced the Yeowomen with 19, while nabbing 10 boards. Kim Holden added 12. The Yeowomen (coached by Frances Flint) also included Nancy Harrison, Marg Mulder, Jean Graham, Anne-Marie Thuss, Petra Wolfbeiss, Anthea Hewitt, Marg Hukter.
In the last quarterfinal, Toronto beat Waterloo 61-50. The Athenas (coached by Sally Kemp) included Patti Edwards, Kim Rau, Hester Groenevelt, Heather Tyler, Brenda Bowering, Cindy Poag, Carolyn Sossi, Anneliese Dyck, Corrine Duncan, Lorraine Lawrence, Corinna Lueg, Lori Parent, Lynne Parent, Patricia Rodger, Jill Salmon, Heather Tyler, Lisa Zinkiewick and Nancy Baumgart.
In the semis, Toronto defeated Brock 73-68 as Angela Orton scored 32, Theresa Burns 17, Peggy Blumenthal 10 and Sue Marzolini, who was chosen player of the game for the Blues, 10. Orton dominated the offensive boards. Toronto extended its lead to 49-38 in the second half before the Badgers rallied to within 68-68. But Orton and Burns iced the win at the line for the Blues. Badget Peggy Stamps told the St. Catharines Standard that Orton was “so big and strong. She’s almost impossible to stop under the basket. And I don’t know why, but she always comes up big against us. … Every time.” Maureen Kelly paced the Badgers with 23. Diane Hilko added 14 and Janice Jockel 10.
In the other semi, Laurentian edged Queen’s 54-50 as Joy Bellinger scored 16, player of the game Lori Kenopic 15 and Anne Rimes 10.
No bronze medal match was played.
In the final, before a standing room only crowd of 1,000, host Toronto defeated Laurentian 64-54 as Angela Orton and Peggy Blumenthal each scored 17. The Blues led 10-2 early and extended the margin to 31-11, hitting eight of their first nine shots, including three buckets by game MVP Peggy Blumenthal. Blumenthal and Sue Marzolini effectively neutralized Voyageurs Lori Kenopic and Anne Rimes in the blocks. “We played as a unit,” Blumenthal told the Varsity. “We depended on the other four people on the floor, it wasn’t just one or two.” Point guard Greta DeLonghi said “Confidence! We knew if we wanted to win, we had to believe we could win. We had to come out as a team and play our best.” Angela Orton said “we came into it really charged. We knew we could do it. Last night’s (Brock) game really helped. We played the whole game.” Anne Rimes led the Voyageurs with 16. Lori Keonpic added 12.
