In the quarterfinals, held in Sudbury, the Ottawa Gee-Gees defeated the Guelph Gryphons 66-56 as Vicki Harber scored 23, Pam Coburn 15 and Cathy Kingsbury 10. Mary Uhlis led the Gryphons with 13. The Gryphons (coached by Karen Lee) also included Judy Antonio, Jane Greaves, Marg Utilig
In the other quarterfinal, the Waterloo Athenas edged the Queen’s Golden Gaels 45-44 despite trailing 22-20 at the half. Carol Kozlik paced the Athenas with 18. Chris Timms added 10 and Norie Spense 10, Jan Passmore 4 and Louise Taylor 3. Penny Wedd and Donna Roman each notched 9 to lead the Golden Gaels. Cathy Gillies added 8. The Athenas outrebounded the Golden Gaels 38-35. The Golden Gaels also included Eva Stewart.
In the semis, the University of Western Ontario Mustangs clipped the Ottawa Gee-Gees 67-54 as Eleanor McKeague scored 16. Pam Coburn led the Gee-Gees with 16.
In the other semi, the Laurentian Voyageurs dispatched the Waterloo Warriors 88-38 after leading 40-26 at the half. Jan Trombly paced the Voyageurs with 24, along with 9 boards. Chris Critelli added 14, Corinne Cote 12, Kim Hansen 10 and Kathy Jennings 10. Agnes Balson nabbed 13 boards and Michele Belanger 7. “We were matching them basket for basket for about 10 minutes until they came on in the second half for the kill,” Athenas coach Sally Kemp told The Chevron. The Voyageurs full-court pressure forced an array of Athena turnovers. Norie Spence paced the Athenas with 10. Carol Kozlik added 9, Chris Timms 6, Bonnie Zagrodney 5, Janet Passmore 4, Vicky Binder 2 and Louise Taylor 2.
In the bronze medal match, the Ottawa Gee-Gees dumped the Waterloo Athenas 60-55. The Gee-Gees led 36-30 at the half. The Athenas rallied to within 44-42 after shifting to a full-court press but missed two opportunities to tie it and Ottawa maintained a slim lead to the final buzzer. Cyndy Tyrlick paced the Gee-Gees with 13. Carol Kozlik paced the Athenas with 18. Bonnie Zagrodney added 10, Chris Timms 8, Janet Passmore 4, Louise Taylor 4 and Cathie Hanna 2. The Athenas (coached by Sally Kemp, manager Annie Bananie, scorekeeper Carol Hicks) also included Norie Spense, Vicky Binder, Brenda Roothan, Marg Kerr, Christine Rozad, Eleanor Spence and Lorraine Luypaert.
In the postseason final, Laurentian stomped the Western Ontario Mustangs 88-50 as Chris Critelli scored 19, Anne Hurley 16, Jan Trombly 14, along with 9 boards, Kathy Jennings 14 and Agnes Balson 10. Eleanor McKeague led the Mustangs with 19.
