In the semis, held in Toronto, McGill defeated Queen’s 38-24 after leading 20-12 at the half. McGill packed it in a tight zone and the Gaels had difficulty scoring from the perimeter. Cynthia Bazin led McGill to an early 7-2 lead but a pair of buckets by Doreen Kenny rallied the Gaels to within 7-5. But Margery Lynch took command as McGill stretched its lead and romped. Bazin finished with 14 for McGill. Lynch led the Martlets with 21. Janet Baillie added 7. Doreen Kenny notched 16 for the Gaels. Hilda Rice added 6 and Norah McGinnis 2.
In the other semi, the host Varsity Blues dumped Western 43-17. Toronto’s front line of Louise Crouch, Sally Ballard and Wilma Hazlitt dominated. Louise Crouch finished with 23. Wilma Hazlitt added 12 and Sally Ballard 8. Marion McMurtry led Western with 6. Mary Wong added 5, Grace Rath 4 and Hazel Cole 2.
In the bronze medal match, Western defeated Queen’s 31-27 as Mary Wong scored 17, Hazel Cole 10, Grace Rath 2 and Marion McMurtry 2. The Gaels led 16-8 at the half but Mary Wong took command in the second frame. Doreen Kenny led Queen’s with 22. Norah McGinnis added 4 and Doris Anderson 1. The Gaels (coached by E Murphy) also included Hilda Rice, Jean Dunlop, Dorothy Napthall, Isa Galbraith, Josephine Tett, Fay Kimmins, Jean Taylor, Eileen Hancock, Jean Wright and Margaret Austin.
In the final, Toronto whipped McGill 53-25 as Louise Crouch scored 39, Sally Ballard 8, Wilma Hazlitt 4 and Bea Longley 2. Marjorie Lynch led McGill with 14. Winfrid Chisholm added 6 and Janet Baillie 5. The Varsity attributed the Blues win to the “six-man defence” system the team had been using in recent years.
