In the last quarterfinal, the Dawson Blues (seeded A1) nipped the Capilano Blues (seeded A4) 73-69 in overtime. Dawson methodically built an early 18-11 lead on the strength of Eleanore Marciszewski’s sharp-shooting. Capilano guard Ashley dela Cruz Yip opened the second quarter with two quick buckets. Teammates Francis Penafiel and Carmelle M’bikata followed suit to knot the score. Yip then picked up her game even more, generating offence for her teammates and herself with speed and passing to give Capilano a 37-32 lead at the half. They extended the margin to 55-45 after three quarters. Dawson gradually worked their way back into the game in the fourth fueled by Dahomee Forgues, who gave the eastern Blues their first lead since the second quarter, with 2:30 on the clock. Both teams traded baskets from there to the end of regulation, sending the game to overtime tied at 63. Dawson muscled their way to a 5-point lead in the extra period and held on for the win. “We all really came together and brought the energy that we’ve shown at Cap before, and showed the rest of the country that we can play,” said Blues rookie MacKenzie Smith told the Capilano Courier. We always knew that body language was so important. But Marika Williams and Kelsey Crocker hit treys to draw the Mystics within 23-21 after one quarter. The Mystics elevated their defensive pressure and pushed the tempo as they rolled to a 46-34 lead at the half. The Mystics kept draining treys as they extended the margin to 70-49 after three quarters and romped to the easy win. The Rattlers rallied to within 38-35 at the half but the Blues led 56-45 after three quarters and iced it in the final frame on the play of Carmelle M’Bikata. The Rattlers rallied no closer than 4 on a trey by Jordyn Kearley.         In the semis, the Humber Hawks clipped the Montmorency Nomades 83-72. The Hawks broke to a 9-0 lead but the Nomades clawed back to within 22-21 after one quarter. Nomade Jael Kabunda led Montmorency to a double-digit lead in the second quarter but Ceejay Nofuente notched a trey to re-ignite Humber’s offence and the Hawks built a 39-37 lead at the half. Nofuente hit a pair of treys late in the third quarter to give Humber a 61-54 lead heading into the final frame. The Hawks soon built their lead to double-digits and though Kabunda hit a pair of late treys, Montmorency was able to rally no closer than three down the stretch. Montmorency, though, kept posting their larger guards inside and built a 26-17 lead after one quarter. The Nomades stretched their lead to 46-27 at the half and led by as many as 29. Capilano rallied no closer than 12 in the final frame. “We were kind of out of gas but we still wanted to give it our all,” Blues rookie Mackenzie Smith told the Capilano Courier. Jael Kabunda was chosen player of the game for the Nomades, while Francis Penafiel earned the laurels for the Blues. Madison Jennex and Marika Williams hit treys as the Mystics built their lead to 35-24 at the half. The Mystics generated 7 points off their full-court press in the final 1:30 as they took a 51-37 lead after three quarters. They soon had the lead at 17 on a pair of buckets by Kelsey McGrath. But Karly Buckingham, Lauren MacEachern and Kiersten Mangold scored to close the gap to six before the Mystics regained command. Maria Carroll was chosen player of the game for the Mystics, while Karly Buckingham earned the laurels for the Mounties. The Nomades size and ability to push the tempo proved the undoing of the perimeter-oriented Mystics. The Nomades led 29-13, 48-30 and 70-44 at the quarters. Paule-Beline Ibata-Pondza was chosen player of the game for the Nomades, while Kelsey McGrath earned the laurels for the Mystics. Dawson clung to a 36-35 lead at the half but the Hawks opened the third quarter with a 13-5 run. Humber built its lead to 10 and 54-48 after three quarters. Felicia Velasquez was chosen player of the game for the Hawks, while Marciszewski earned the laurels for the Blues.
