In the quarterfinals, the 4th-seeded Sainte-Foy Dynamiques dusted the 5th-seeded St. Thomas Tommies 69-51. The Dynamiques ended the first quarter ahead 13-11 – thanks to free throws by Gabrielle Girard and Audrey Roberge – and finished the first half up 32-24. In the third quarter, Jillian Lamoreau of the Tommies nailed a perfect three-pointer, but a strong offensive game by the Dynamiques brought the score to 54-37 at the end of the third. The top-seeded Grant MacEwan Griffins clocked the 8th-seeded Seneca Sting 87-65. The Griffins took command midway through the first quarter, after which they led 24-10. Their full court pressure gave the Sting fits as they built a 45-38 lead at the half. The Griffins came out in the third quarter playing very aggressive with fast break offense. MacEwan continued to utilize the six-foot height of key players Erin MacKinnon, Kelley Fagan and Kristen Monasterski to dominate the boards. Sting’s Sharika Smith tried to shift her team’s momentum by sinking a three pointer, but the third quarter ended in favour of MacEwan 69-49. The Sting never threatened. Jessilyn Fairbanks was chosen player of the game for the Griffins, while Samantha Evans earned the laurels for the Sting. The 2nd-seeded Dawson Blues blasted the 7th-seeded Lethbridge Kodiaks 84-64. The Blues set the tone quickly with a pair of steals for runout layups. It was 8-0 before Lisa Ivanics scored the first basket for the Kodiaks. Marilyse Roy answered back with a trey and Janice Quintos stole a break-away and sank a layup to make it 13-2. In the last seconds of the first quarter, Kodiak Lindsey Pierson threw up a long shot and sunk a three to rally Lethbridge within 29-19. Starting the second quarter, the Blues scored the first basket again, but Pierson answered right back driving it to the hoop to sink a layup. The Kodiaks struggled to get rebounds, and gave the Blues the opportunity to score. The Blues scored two baskets and a three-pointer and finished the first half 54-32. It was a slow start for both teams in the second half. The Blues finished the third quarter 67-46. Starting the fourth quarter, Jenn Silver scored her third three-pointer of the game for the Blues. The Kodiaks rattled the Blues cage a bit with their half court press. They came back stronger but could never come within 10. In the last quarterfinal, the 6th-seeded Algonquin Thunder knocked off the 3rd-seeded University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves 74-62. The opening quarter was a tightly contested physical affair that came to a close with a slim Thunder lead by a score of 18-17. The back and forth contest continued into the second quarter, with no team being able to decisively pull ahead. The Timberwolves headed into halftime with a 35-34 lead. Midway through the third quarter the Thunder were able to break open a 10-point lead. The Timberwolves rallied to end the third frame and headed into the fourth trailing by a score of 52-46. The Thunder were able to break away from a deadlocked game in the final minutes of the fourth quarter with a 10-0 run. Abeer Farhat was chosen player of the game for the Thunder. “It was a great team win and it was one of best played games of the season. We defended very well, took care of ball, executed very well on offence and hit our foul shots,” said Thunder coach John MacInnis. In the bronze quarterfinals, the 5th-seeded St. Thomas Tommies dusted the 8th-seeded Seneca Sting 87-56. The Sting took an early lead as the Tommies struggled to fit their touch. But a trey by Kelly Debow rallied St. Thomas within 23-21 after one quarter. The Tommies dominated the second frame as they built a 40-29 lead. They extended the margin to 67-41 after three quarters and romped. Kelly Debow was chosen player of the game for the Tommies, while Sihen Berhe earned the laurels for the Sting. In the other bronze quarterfinal, the 3rd-seeded University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves defeated the 7th-seeded Lethbridge Kodiaks. The Timberwolves led 21-19, 36-32 and 52-51 at the quarters. The Kodiaks took the lead in the first few minutes of the fourth quarter but soon lost it. Timberwolves took a large lead of 61-54 with about seven minutes left in the quarter. Within two minutes the Kodiaks missed back-to-back layouts. “I am happy with their effort. They had a very good start but they were playing the third best team in Canada,” said Kodiaks coach Avery Harrison. In the semis, the 4th-seeded Sainte-Foy Dynamiques handed the top-seeded Grant McEwan Griffins their first loss of the season by a 67-61 count. The Dynamiques full court pressure gave the Griffins fits and their attacking style drew a ton of fouls. They built a nine-point lead at the half and then patiently worked deep into each shot clock while hanging on for the win. “We didn’t perform the way we needed in a national championship,” said Griffins coach Rob Poole. “St. Foy did.” Sarah-Jane Marois paced the Dynamiques with 26 on 11-22 from the floor, 1-4 from the arc, 3-8 from the line, 8 boards and 4 assists. But Dawson rallied to knot the score at 11 after one quarter and then built their lead to 27-23 at the half. The Blues began to dominate in the second half and extended their margin to 49-39 after three quarters and romped. “We played a really tough team,” says Thunder coach John MacInnis. “My kids played their hearts out, nothing but proud in how they competed in the effort. In the bronze semis, the 5th-seeded St. Thomas Tommies edged the 6th-seeded Algonquin Thunder 63-57. “We just wanted to run and make it as physical a game as possible,” said Tommies coach Fred Connors. “We were hoping to wear their legs out but have to give them credit they were a tough competitor.” The Tommies built an early six-point lead and maintained the edge through the first quarter, after which they led 20-15. They extended their margin to double digits before Algonquin rallied within 34-26 at the half. In the second half, the Tommies built their lead to 14 as Trish Grey was forced to the Algonquin bench with an injury. But the Thunder rallied to within five on buckets by Sandre Bascoe and Jennifer Wolfe-Bard. A foul shot made good by Algonquin Stacey Poapst closed the gap even further, but the Tommies answered back to regain a 50-38 lead after three quarters. Abeer Farhat nailed a trey to open the fourth quarter but the Tommies had the answers. In the other bronze semi, the top-seeded Grant MacEwan Griffins dusted the 3rd-seeded University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves 73-57. MacEwan took an early 11-7 lead and maintained the margin at 21-17 after one quarter. They quickly built the lead to double digits and headed into the lockers leading 41-27. At the beginning of the third quarter, the teams traded points and seemed to be evenly matched. UNBC worked to close the gap with a trey from Jennifer Clyne but the Griffins kept parading to the free throw line and led 57-42 after three quarters and romped. MacEwan coach Rob Poole said that after the emotional letdown of losing their first game of the season, he was proud of the way his team played. “We had to step up our game offensively, we had to have some people step up their game. Jessilyn Fairbanks was a big reason why we won today. We stayed aggressive.” Jessilyn Fairbanks was chosen player of the game for the Griffins, while Sarah Robin earned the laurels for the Timberwolves. In the bronze medal match, the 5th-seeded St. Thomas Tommies stunned the top-seeded Grant MacEwan Griffins 73-56. The game was a physical affair, with bodies from both teams flying everywhere. Although Grant MacEwan’s Courtney Knox scored the first points of the game, it was Kelly Debow’s trey immediately afterwards that kick-started St. Thomas’s dominance. The Tommies defence was stellar, though Bayan Kurd’s two free-throws made it 17-12 after one quarter. Debow added a pair of treys as the Tommies build their lead to 33-20 at the half. Debow and Kelly Vass dominated the paint as St. Thomas extended their lead to 53-35 after three quarters. The Griffins played a strong fourth quarter, with three pointers from Kurd and Hilary Annich. They managed to close the gap to 10 points with a minute to go, but the Tommies kept the game out of reach. “We played tough,” said Tommies coach Fred Connors. “We thought that if we could turn it into a scrappy game, it would be to our advantage.” Griffins coach Rob Poole said that “when you get to this level, you have to play well. The Tommies did what they had to and we didn’t get it done. That’s why they are bronze medalists.” Kelly Debow was chosen player of the game for the Tommies, while Kristen Monasterski earned the laurels for the Griffins. In the final, the 4th-seeded Sainte-Foy Dynamiques captured their fourth title in five years by whipping the 2nd-seeded Dawson Blues 86-56, while avenging a loss in the RSEQ postseason tournament. The Dynamiques built a 21-16 lead after one quarter primarily on transition buckets. Dawson knotted the score but the Dynamiques began to dominate the paint and built a 9-point lead en route to a 43-36 edge at the half. Sainte-Foy built their lead to 60-46 after three quarters as their perimeter game on rack. The final quarter saw Sainte-Foy work the perimeter as well as the key, which made defence duties hard for the Blues. Dynamiques’ three-point shooting played a huge factor in the final minutes, firmly closing the door on any chance of a comeback by the Blues. Sarah-Jane Marois paced the Dynamiques with 25 on 9-15 from the floor, 1-3 from the arc, 6-8 from the line, 6 boards and 5 assists.
