In the last quarterfinal, the 2nd-seeded Sheridan Bruins blasted the 7th-seeded St. Thomas Tommies 84-39. “We came out and showed some (of the) experience we earned last year,” coach Shane Bascoe said. “We just played defence the way we can play defence.” The early stages provided some glimpses of the same tenacity that the other lower seeds had shown throughout the day with St. Thomas keeping pace with the Lady Bruins and holding an 11-10 lead with 3:45 remaining in the first quarter. Good-underdog story ends and the superlatives about the skill and depth of the Double-Blue begin. Sheridan responded to the early adversity with a 33-4 run (Sheridan out-scored St. Thomas 25-4 in the second quarter to take a commanding 43-15 halftime lead. “Normally we kind of get into a phase where we’re not really focused in the beginning – hopefully, we won’t do that again – but once Caity Wright made some adjustments defensively, we started to pull away,” Bascoe said of the run. In the other semi, the 2nd-seeded Sheridan Bruins stuffed the 6th-seeded Grant MacEwan Griffins 71-63. MacEwan led 17-10 after one quarter and 26-22 at the half. Sheridan led 49-44 after three quarters. The Bruins collected coach Shane Bascoe’s 100th career win. “I thought we played well defensively throughout the whole game and because our defence was so sound, I thought that we’d take over in the second half,” Bascoe said. “We’ve been in games before where we haven’t shot the ball particularly well in the beginning, but it’s a rarity because we have so much depth. In the second half it all started clicking at the right time.” MacEwan, the runners-up from Alberta, took the fight to the Lady Bruins and held an 18-10 lead midway through the first half. The Double-Blue managed to chip away at their deficit though and after a 7-2 run to close the half, trailed 26-22 at the break. In the second half, Sheridan burst out of the gates to take their first lead with 7:04 left in the third quarter after Hali Burns grabbed a loose ball and put up a runner from eight-feet out in one motion to beat the expiring shot clock. From there, thanks to some lethal deep shooting and an intense physicality, they began to assert themselves and took command of the game. They pushed their advantage as high as 10 in the late stages of the contest and weathered some big shots from MacEwan down the stretch to thwart the rally. Carolann Cloutier added 14 on 6-22 from the floor, 1-7 from the arc, 1-3 from the line, 5 boards and 4 steals. Katye Chase added 9 on 3-7 from the floor, 1-2 from the arc, 2-4 from the line and 3 assists. Kizzy Clark added 8 on 3-7 from the floor, 2-6 from the line and 11 boards. Serginha Estime added 6 on 2-10 from the floor, 2-6 from the line, 25 boards and 4 steals. Marilene Lapierre added 2 and Genevieve Gaboriault 2, while Janice Quintos, Haley McKitterick, Rebekah Ward, Tyler Hardie and Aurelei Canuel were scoreless. The Blues hit 20-64 (.313) from the floor, 5-17 (.294) from the arc and 10-24 (.427) from the line, while garnering 54 boards, including 23 on the offensive glass, 18 fouls, 10 assists, 30 turnovers, 2 blocks and 15 steals.
In the final, the 5th-seed Sainte-Foy Dynamiques repeated as champs by dusting the 2nd-seeded Sheridan Bruins 70-62 after leading 17-12, 30-25 and 48-39 at the quarters. “Sainte-Foy is a really good team and we gave them everything we could I felt and they persevered through it, so I give them a lot of respect for winning their second (national championship) in a row,” Sheridan coach Shane Bascoe said. “I’m not disappointed in our girls; I thought our girls played really well. The odds were against us from the beginning playing in their house and that was an eight-point game. So, there’s no disappointment here other than that of losing the game.” Sainte-Foy sprinted out of the gates, scoring just nine seconds in and opening the game on a 10-2 run over the first 4:07. Sheridan weathered the early storm and battled back to pull within five at the end of the first quarter. Late in the second quarter, an 8-0 run with 3:37 remaining in the first half gave the Lady Bruins a short-lived 25-24 edge. Sainte-Foy wasn’t willing to concede for long though and closed the frame on a 6-0 run of their own to lead 30-25 at halftime. In the second half, Sainte-Foy had unanswered runs of 9-0 and 5-0 and was tenuously close to leading by double digits for much of the final 20 minutes. They lead by as many as 12, but received a fight from the Double-Blue until the waning moments before time expired. Bascoe says a big difference in the outcome was Sainte-Foy’s ability to nullify any sort of momentum the Ontario champs could create. “I thought if we just worked on the little things, we’d have a chance, but every single time we got within earshot of getting back into the game, it’s almost like they just worked a little bit harder,” Bascoe said. “That’s the game, they had runs, they stopped our run and we didn’t do a good enough job of stopping theirs. The intensity was at a higher level and that was obviously some experience that we’re going to use, myself as a coach and the girls that are returning next year. It was great, I mean the crowd was going wild, it was packed and it was intense. We belonged there, I loved every second of it and I’d love to go back. So we’re going to look at this and use this as fuel to try and get back to the nationals next year.” Marie-Pascale Nadeau paced Sainte-Foy with 17 on 7-12 from the floor, 3-4 from the line, 4 boards, 3 blocks and 2 steals. Catherine Groleau added 15 on 6-13 from the floor, 1-3 from the arc, 2-4 from the line, 4 boards and 3 steals. Francoise Charest added 11 on 3-11 from the floor, 1-2 from the arc, 4-8 from the line, 4 boards and 5 assists. Marie-Line Petit added 8 on 2-10 from the floor, 2-3 from the arc, 2-2 from the line, 3 boards and 4 assists. Marie-Laurence F-Laberge added 6 on 3-5 from the floor. The Dynamiques hit 25-67 (.373) from the floor, 5-15 from the arc and 15-22 (.682) from the line, while garnering 42 boards, including 14 on the offensive glass, 18 fouls, 13 assists, 12 turnovers, 7 blocks and 6 steals. Donisha Young led Sheridan with 21 on 7-20 from the floor, 7-9 from the line and 6 boards. Hali Burns added 13 on 4-13 from the floor, 3-5 from the arc, 2-2 from the line and 9 boards. Caity Wright added 8 on 2-5 from the floor, 4-4 from the line and 6 boards. Sarah Moxley notched 7 on 3-9 from the floor and 1-2 from the arc.
