In the semis, host Calgary defeated U.B.C. 68-54. “Obviously, not a lot of people gave us a chance to win,” said U.B.C. coach Bev Smith. “Our attitude was that if we could keep it close, who knows what might happen.” It also happened because the Dinosaurs struggled in the second half. “We had a bad offensive lapse,” said coach Donna Rudakas. “Both teams were coming down the floor and not scoring.” Karen Degner led Calgary with 18 points and 5 boards. Jan Jordan paced U.B.C. with 12.

In the other semi, Victoria defeated Lethbridge 61-53 as Jenny Sutton scored 14, Heather Bohez 9, Kim Poland 9, Kathy Keats 8, Shannon Conway 8, Kelly Boucher 7, Adele Fedorak 4 and Tara Gallaway 2. Jenny Sutton added 11, Adele Fedorak 10, Heather Bohez 8, Kim Poland 7, Tara Gallaway 7, Kelly Boucher 5 and Shannon Conway 2, while Sue Loney and Lynnette Schramm were scoreless.

Following the season, Calgary coach Donna Roman-Rudakas resigns. “I felt that I’ve been unfairly treated by the U of C for being a woman and coaching a women’s team,” said Rudakas, the CIAU coach of the year, who led her squad to a (36-0) campaign and a national title. Rudakas also says she would be filing a complaint with the Alberta Human Rights Commission. “They offered me part-time employment. At this time, I fell that would be a big step backwards for me professionally. The contract is unacceptable. I thought I’d get better.” A year earlier, Rudakas was forced to take a part-time position when the university stripped her of her role as full-time coach and coordinator of women’s athletics. “Why should the men’s position be full-time and the women’s part-time?” Rudakas asked. Calgary athletic director Bob Corran said at the time that budgetary constraints necessitated the shift. Rudakas was CIAU and Can West coach of the year while the Dinosaurs made their fifth appearance in the nationals since 1980. Over the previous two years, Calgary was (68-4).

Rudakas filed an appeal with the Alberta Human Rights Commission but withdrew it when Corran reconsidered and inked her to a three-year deal, with full-time duties including coaching, teaching, and working as an assistant on the summer sports programs.
