In the regular season, Victoria was undefeated and Calgary finished second. Alberta, Lethbridge and Saskatchewan finished with identical 4-6 records. With the league moving to a single-elimination tournament, the tie-breaker moved to games between the trio, in which Lethbridge was 3-1, Alberta 2-2 and Saskatchewan 1-3. Lethbridge was then seeded third in the tourney but Saskatchewan got a berth as the host, leaving Alberta out in the cold.

Huskiettes coach Pat Jackson told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that her troops “got too excited.” Huskiettes Judy Lang said “we were using a different defence. We’d used it once before against Alberta and won. … Drop into a zone when they pass to a wing and go man-to-man when they take it to the head of the key. It was working … that’s what makes them tough. They have good individual players but they play as a team. We showed some of that tonight too. We just the ball over too many times in the last five minutes.”

In the other semi, Calgary edged Lethbridge 65-61. The Pronghorns led 42-32 at the half by bombing from the perimeter. Julie Hendrix paced the Dinos with 19. Jane Adolphe added 18 and Karla Karch 13. Angela Hvlaka led the Pronghorns with 18. Sharon May added 16.

In the final, Victoria defeated Calgary 70-52 as all-conference guard Tracie McAra scored 16. Sandy Espeseth and Shelley Godfrey each added 12 for Victoria, Susie Neil scored 8, along with 10 boards, Sandy Chambers 8 and Janine Prince 2, while Shawnee harle, Jane Williams and Dina Van Hahn were scoreless. The Vikettes led 40-18 at the half. Julie Dais and Julie Hendrix each scored 10 to lead Calgary. Jane Adolphe added 8, Brenda Abbott 8, Karla Karch 6, Carol Ploen 6 and Lynn Whan 4, while Jenny Woods, Mary Mills and Diane Bailey were scoreless. Victoria outrebounded Calgary 34-18. Vikes coach Kathy Shields told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “people were saying who is going to do your scoring now that (Luanne) Hebb is gone. Well, what happened was the people who were scoring four to six points last year began contributing 10 or 12. More people became involved in the offence. … (Susie Neil) really got us going. (Janet Mackie) this weekend, she broke out. Could have come at a better time.”
