In the semis, Saskatchewan defeated U.B.C. 92-90; 104-101 (2g-0). …………………………………………………… In game one, the Huskies opened with a 92-90 victory over U.B.C. as Jon Cleland stripped T’Bird guard Perrie Scarlett of the ball with 15 seconds to go drove in for an easy layup to score the winning bucket. Saskatchewan was led by Byron Tokarchuk 28, along with 8 boards, Kirk Jones 15, Jon Cleland 14, Greg Jockims 13 and David Karwacki 10. U.B.C. was paced by Mike Clarke 17, Perrie Scarlett 15, J.D. Jackson 14 and Al Lalonde 12. …………………………………………………… In the second game, Saskatchewan nipped U.B.C. 104-101 in overtime as Byron Tokarchuk dominated the contest, scoring 49 and nabbing 16 boards. He was all but unstoppable. “He was a Mack Truck out there,” Thunderbirds coach Bruce Enns told the Ubyssey. David Karwacki added 14 and Jon Cleland 12. “We did what we had to do to win,” Huskies coach Guy Vetrie told The Sheaf. “Different players at different times came through for us.” J.D. Jackson led U.B.C. with 42, Al Lalonde 22 and Perrie Scarlett 13.
In the other semi, Victoria defeated Alberta 82-77; 110-81 (2g-0). …………………………………………………… In game one, the Vikings prevailed 82-77 as Graham Taylor scored 26. Neither team led by more than two until the Bears were called for an over and back infraction down the stretch. “It was a great, great ball game,” said Alberta coach Don Horwood. “Not only did Taylor make 26 points but he is such a good passer as well. He had six or 8 assists. He mesmerized our players. We really thought we were going to win that game.” …………………………………………………… In the second game, Victoria thrashed Alberta 110-81 as Spencer McKay scored 34, Graham Taylor 26, Geoff McKay 15, Cord Clemens 12, Wade Loukes 7, Vito Pasquale 6, Dale Olson 5, Colin Brousson 3 and Al Phillips 2, while Jerry Divocky was scoreless. Rick Stanley paced the Golden Bears with 22. Sean Chursinoff added 15, Scott McIntyre 11, Chris Toutant 9, Mark Baker 9, Dave Youngs 8, Ed Joseph 3, Mike Frisby 2 and Cliff Rowein 1, while Ryan Smith, Bill Lavergne and Brian Halsey were scoreless. The Vikes built a 30-point lead in the first half but Alberta rallied with a full court press to trim the margin to 10 with five minutes to play. “I told them, ‘let’s take a run at these guys’,” said Alberta coach Don Horwood. But Graham Taylor countered with a bomb. “Taylor came down and shot from the NBA three-point line and hit nothing but twice. It really burst our bubble,” Horwood said.
In the finals, Victoria defeated Saskatchewan 113-91; 91-96; 96-76 (2g-1).
In game one, Victoria annihilated Saskatchewan 113-91 as Geoff McKay scored 25, Cord Clemens 22, Spencer McKay 17, Graham Taylor 12, Jerry Divocky 12, Wade Loukes 11, Dale Olson 10 and Vito Pasquale 4, while Colin Brousson and Alan Phillips were scoreless. Vikings coach Ken Shields told the Victoria Times-Colonist that Divocky “kept the ball away from (Byron Tokarchuk) and when Tokarchuk did get the ball, he had very few uncontested shots.” Divocky said “I’ve always played well against him. I made sure I was ready and then I fronted him and kept between him and the ball. Without the ball, he’s no threat. With the ball, he’s going to put it in the hoop 80% of the time. When you keep the ball away from Byron, you shut down the Huskies.” Tokarchuk paced the Huskies with 27. John Cleland added 19, Greg Jockims 14, David Karwacki 11, Kirk Jones 8, Sheldon Ryma 6, Doug Prokop 4 and Tim Conlin 2, while Ken Ostertag, Dwayne Heidt and Matt McCullough were scoreless.
In game two, Saskatchewan evened the series with a a 96-91 win as Byron Tokarchuk scored 28, Sheldon Ryma 20, Kirk Jones 19, John Cleland 15, David Karwacki 10 and Greg Jockims 4, while Ken Ostertag, Dwayne Heidt, Doug Prokop, Tim Conlin and Matt McCullough were scoreless. Cord Clemens led the Vikings with 24. Graham Taylor added 19, Geoff Mckay 16, Spencer McKay 10, Dale Olson 10, Wade Loukes 8, Alan Phillips 2 and Jerry Divocky 2, while Vito Pasquale and Colin Brousson were scoreless.
Victoria dominated the second half of the deciding contest, winning 96-76 as Graham Taylor scored 18, Cord Clemsn 17, Spencer McKay 16, Dale Olson 12, Wade Loukes 10, Jerry Divocky 8, Geoff Mckay 6, Vito Pasquale 4 and Colin Brousson 4, while Alan Phillips was scoreless. Saskatchewan led 48-33 at the half but collapsed. Byron Tokarchuk paced the Huskies with 23. Jon Cleland added 21, Kirk Jones 13, Sheldon Ryma 12, Greg Jockims 4 and David Karwacki 3, while Ken Ostertag, Dwayne Heidt, Doug Prokop, Tim Conlin and Matt McCullough were scoreless. “It was a hard-fought series, as I expected,” Huskies coach Guy Vetrie told The Sheaf. “We pushed them to the limit but Victoria showed the kind of character they have by winning.”
