In the semis, (4-6) Saskatchewan upset (9-1) regular season champion Victoria Vikings 78-76 as Byron Tokarchuk scored 31, Sheldon Ryma 14, John Cleland 10, Kirk Jones 7, David Karwacki 6, Greg Jockims 5, John Dewar 3 and Mark Peters 2, while Ken Ostertag, Rog Regnier and Tim Conlin were scoreless. “We played the game we had to play,” Huskies guard John Cleland told The Sheaf. “We gave up the outside shot to them but you have to give up something, so that’s what we gave up.” The Vikes had a shot to tie it but Huskie Kirk Jones partially deflected a shot by Shawn Kalinovich with less than 10 seconds to play. “We shut down that outside shot when it counted,” Cleland said. Victoria was led by Shawn Kalinovich 22. Dave Sheehan added 12, Cord Clemens 10, Vito Pasquale 10, Wade Loukes 9, Lloyd Scrubb 5, Graham Taylor 4, Geoff McKay 2 and Rob Kreke 2, while Randy Steel and Jamie Newman were scoreless. The Victoria Vikings, who went on to win the national title, (coached by Ken Shields, assisted by Joe Weisbrodt and Quinn Groenheyde) also included Jerry Divoky and Brian Kruger.
In the other semi, Lethbridge defeated Calgary 77-65. Calgary took a 5-point lead in the second half but then failed to score on four consecutive possession. Dinosaurs coach Gary Howard told The Gauntlet that “they (the Pronghorns) were able to put things together with their more experienced team. They hit on four straight hoops and we panicked a little.” The Dinos scored only 7 points in the final five minutes of play. Ken McMurray led the Pronghorns with 19. Greg Maillet led the Dinosaurs with 22. John Vigna added 14. The Dinosaurs (coached by Gary Howard, assisted by Bill Mitchell, John Rhodin and Tom Bishop) included Kurt Kelly, Greg Maillet, John Vigna, Jeff Cahoon, Donovan Lawrence, David Clutchey, Preston Jickling, Tim Sprung, Harlon McMaster, Matt Smith, Leroy Gentles, Rob Driscoll and Rick Pease.
There was no evidence of a bronze medal match having been played.
In the final, Lethbridge defeated Saskatchewan 86-76 as Ken McMurray scored 21 and Jerome Ell 20. Kirk Jones paced the Huskies with 25 points and 12 boards. Byron Tokarchuk added 22. Huskies coach Guy Vetrie told the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix that “our forwards played great but our guards got eaten up. Lethbridge’s guards scored 22 points and our scored 9. If we couldn’t cut those turnovers in half, we’d have won. … All game, we were down by four, down by six, down by four. When came down to the end, we were in a situation where we had to foul and it’s tough to win like that.” Saskatchewan outrebounded Lethbridge 42-26, but committed 27 turnovers. Vetrie told The Sheaf that “there were a lot of wrong decisions made on our part, (and) too much indecision on the part of the passer.”
