In the playoffs (a best of three final, no semis), Alberta defeated Victoria 61-59; 69-55 (2g-0).

In the opener, Alberta prevailed 61-59 despite scoring only two points in a seven-minute stretch of the second half. Doug Baker, a 6-5 forward, paced the Bears with 16. Mike Abercrombie added 12, Keith Smith 10, Pat Rooney 10, Doug Lucas 6, Steve Panteluk 5 and Mark Jorgenson 2, while Scott Laurie, Bob Baker, Jerry Shawkey, Jim Bonin and Brent Patterson were scoreless. Lee Edmondson led the Vikings with 17. Robbie Paris added 14, Jim Duddridge 112, Mickey Welder 8, Grant Boland 4 and Chris Webb 4, while Ted Anderson, Tom Watson, Ian Hyde-lay, Dale McLaughlin and Warren Wagstaff were scoreless.

In the second contest, Alberta blasted Victoria 69-55 as Doug Baker shot .810 from the floor, hitting 13-16 shots and scoring 28. Pat Rooney added 13, Keith Smith 8, Doug Lucas 6, Brent Patterson 6, Steve Panteluk 4, Scott Laurie 2 and Jerry Shawkey 2, while Mike Abercrombie, Mark Jorgenson, Bob Baker and Jim Bonin were scoreless. Lee Edmondson led Victoria with 17. Grant Boland added 12, Mickey Welder 8, Jim Duddridge 8, Warren Wagstaff 6, Chris Hebb 2, Tom Watson 2 and Dale McLaughlin 2, while Ted Anderson and Ian Hyde-Lay were scoreless. Alberta led 33-31 at half. The Bears hit 27-81 from the floor and nabbed 35 boards. Victoria shot 25-76 from floor and grabbed 41 boards. The Bears were a run-and-gun team. “We had absolutely no size,” said Brent Patterson. “We relied as much as possible on the fast break, solely, if possible. Baker was 6-5 but he could only jump two inches. He might as well have been 2-2.” Under coach Garry Smith, the Bears went 16-4 in the regular season. It was invariably party time after a game. “There’d be 200 people there. I remember our first meeting of the year. We talked about how many beers you could have after a game.” Smith voted for none, the players for two. The players got their way. “It was two beer on Friday, two cases Saturday,” said Patterson. “We wouldn’t go overboard if there was a game the next day but on Saturday, there were no rules. The other teams used to love coming to Edmonton.” In response, Smith instituted a river valley run on at 10 a.m. on Sundays. Doug Lucas said the focus was more on fashion that fitness. “You’d wear your shorts outside your pants and guys would be wearing whatever clothes they inherited the night before.” Baker said “we had guys who didn’t drink, and guys who were religious, and they were included in everything. We had great team spirit.”
