In their opener, Canada dispatched Senegal 72-57 after leading 22-14, 41-33 and 58-48 at the quarters. Senegal took an early 5-3 lead but Sylla Swords nailed a trio of treys as Canada took command in the first quarter. Canada led by as many as 17 but Senegal rallied to within 48-47 in the third frame as Sabou Gueye notched a bucket. But Canada countered with a 10 run ignited bookended by Delaney Gibb and Shaina Pellington treys. “I think it’s a good start for us. You always want to start with a win,” said Canadian coach Nell Fortner. “I thought we played really tough and did a good job on the boards tonight. We know Senegal is a very, very good rebounding team and tough to keep off the boards, so it’s nice to win that battle.” Kayla Alexander paced Canada with 16 on 7-10 from the floor, 2-2 from the line and 7 boards. In the final, Canada earned a berth in the 2027 Olympic qualifying tournament by dusting Mexico 83-53 after leading 26-11, 47-26 and 66-35 at the quarters. Canada took command with an 11-0 run to open the second half. Mexico countered with a 9-0 run but drew no closer than 58-35. Canada dominated the boards on both ends of the floor. Canadian guard Syla Swords said “it’s exciting (to be named tournament MVP), but that’s not really why I play for Canada. Coach started our game today by asking who we play for, and the response was immediately: Canada. When we started training camp at the beginning of June, we wanted to go 5-0. We didn’t just want to win the tournament; we wanted to go undefeated. We took it one game at a time, and I think we did it in great fashion.” Canadian coach Nell Fortner said “the goal all summer long was to win this tournament, and we did that. We did it in fine fashion today. I’m super proud of my team. We had young players and veterans who had to come together and play together for the first time. I thought we really gelled well, and it all came to fruition today.” Kayla Alexander paced Canada with 14 on 6-9 from the floor, 2-2 from the line, 4 boards, 3 assists and 2 blocks. With the win, Canada qualified for the Olympic qualification tournament to be held in February, 2028.
